At Downtown Portland/City Center's India House is a treasure-trove of delicacies for diners. There is a lot offered inside the city storefront, which is only steps from MAX. Do not worry if you miss lunch, because the same goodies are offered up as affordable appetizers and entrees at dinner. Try the Chicken Saag, a tasty dish with spinach, as well as delightful tandoori delicacies. There is a full bar, as well as some rare Eastern beers. The pleasant interiors offer plenty of seating for group diners.

Now this is Indian Food – A mutual friend took my husband and myself to lunch there and we were surprised how wonderful the food was. Since we moved here from SF, we were always comparing the indian food in SF to here. We're so thrilled we found this place. The food is fantastic, sure the chicken tikka is dyed red then again have you seen the chicken tandoori..it's all for looks, it all tastes good. The only beef's we've had with them is on Saturday they open at 12pm not at 11:30am as advertised on their signs. Depends on th... read more
ABSOLUTLY TERRIFFIC!!!! – I have no idea about what some of the people below are talking about. I have been going here for ten years straight every friday night, and the only downside is that it does get busy. I personally know the owner and chefs and the're all from India. No fakies here. Someone said that the food etc. wasn't origional or too spicy, you've got to expect that, it's always going to be spicy because of the origins. It does tend to get packed, as I said so if there's an expectation or a big group you must, mus... read more
Great Food – The India House is always excellent. The food is especially great when you arrive at the beginning of the buffet. The atmosphere is excellent and relaxing, the service extraordinary, and the clientele pleasant. This is actually the only place I go out to eat!
the best Indian food in Portland – Of all the Indian Restaurants in the Portland area this one has the best food. After moving to Arizona, I miss this place the most for Indian food. My wife and I have flown back to Portland just to eat here.
Good evening – We went on a Friday evening. The restaurant filled up by 7pm, so reservations after that time are probably a good idea. The food was good, the waiters were friendly and efficient, and overall it was a good evening. We did not experience any of the negatives mentioned in some of the other reviews below.
Gone Down Hill – I used to think this was one of the nicest Indian restaurants in Portland. I went there last night, it has been a while, but I was quite surprised at the reduced quality particularly in the food and also in the sevice. My wife's shrimp curry was just about lacking shrimp at all! If fincances are the problem, I recommend charging more and making the food quality, presentation and sevice much better.
Decent food, great prices, but.. – For $6.95 the lunch buffet is a good deal. Like most Indian restaurants with the exception of the Bombay Cricket Club, dinner prices just arent worth it. The basmati rice isn't dry like some places. The chicken and vegetable entrees are average, the samosas are very good, and there's a nice selection of condiments. Service is either non-expressive, or in today's case, the thin male server had an "I'm sick of this place" attitude.
Fantastic! – My brother and I stumbled across this place last weekend and went in for the lunch buffet. We could not believe this food! I kept waiting to find something I didn't like, but everything I tried was better than the last! I don't know a thing about Indian food, but I do know good food when I taste it. The buffet is an incredible bargain, and if you hit it just right - try Saturday around 1:30 pm - you'll get excellent service like we did.
Surprisingly disappointing – Having good memories from India House a year or so ago, I talked a friend from India into going there. It was very disappointing to the point of embarrassment. We asked for the food to be medium and it came almost too spicy to eat. We all had heartburn afterward. And what's up with all the food being red? The place is still full and once it fills up, getting service is challenging. Far from authentic or even good flavor at this point in time. Hoping they will raise their standards for the future.... read more
