At Downtown Portland/City Center's India House is a treasure-trove of delicacies for diners. There is a lot offered inside the city storefront, which is only steps from MAX. Do not worry if you miss lunch, because the same goodies are offered up as affordable appetizers and entrees at dinner. Try the Chicken Saag, a tasty dish with spinach, as well as delightful tandoori delicacies. There is a full bar, as well as some rare Eastern beers. The pleasant interiors offer plenty of seating for group diners.

No chutney.... but apricot jam! Sadly disappointing! – We went for a Thursday night dinner and were truly disappointed in the the quality of the food, though the place was cozy and the service was fine. I ordered the chicken tandoori dinner and my husband got the lamb. I enjoy cooking from scratch and have made a number of curries in my cooking life, as well as having tried Indian at about a dozen restaurants. This food tasted like it had been made from a lot of premixed, prepackaged and otherwise not fresh ingredients. It l... read more
Not so good – I recently took my boyfriend to the India House for his birthday because we had heard it was the best Indian food in Portland, but I wouldn't say it was more than average. It was the greasiest Indian food I've ever eaten. Everything from the naan to entrees were drenched in grease as well as burned and brought to the table cold. Maybe they were having a bad night in the kitchen but I wouldn't go back to give them a second chance.
Better than some of India's finest restaurants. Right blend of spices! Great vegetarian dishes. – I'm a pretty picky eater when it comes to particular foods. India House has the Best Vegetarian Dishes I've ever tasted when it comes to Indian food and that includes all the 5 star restaurants I've been to in India! In particular, I love their spinach dishes. India puts the right spices into their blend of curries. Their mulligatany soup (not vegetarian), is fantastic. I've always passed the India House, but never went in, I'm ... read more
Very nice place for the price!! – I love the food that served here at India house. Chicken tikka was so soft and flavorful. The lamb also very tastety. I am not the lamb eater and I loved it here.
How can you not like this food?? – I love the food here! I've eaten at many Indian restaurants and this is one of the best! The food is anything but "bland" as one person said. Just try it for yourself, I think you'll enjoy it too.
Still seeking a good Indian restaurant – The food all tasted the same, and the brightly colored dye in some of the dishes could not disguise this fact. No subtleties of flavor, no richness --- as one member put it, yes, some dishes did taste as though they were made with condensed tomato soup. Definitely not worth a return visit!
Hmmmm – Well, now, being from India and all that doesn't necessarily mean you make great Indian food...at least that's not what they're serving up at the 6.95 lunch buffet. Perhaps the a la carte items are better, but the buffet is beat. A vastly unimpressive lineup of salad (um, with jalapenos?), saag (soapy tasting), and the ever-present fire-engine red tandoori chicken and tikka masala (yawners, both). Oh, and a vat of soupy lentils, rice, samosas and something that's supposed to pass for kheer rice pudding. Great locatio... read more
My favorite Indian restaurant! – I could live on their Chicken Tikka Masala, Garlic Naan, and Veggie Samosas every day! Great food, nice romantic atmosphere. Great for dates!
the best? Sorry just not up to snuff – We arrived on Thursday evening hearing this was the best Indian food in Portland. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala which my waitress told me was really good. My partner got the Lamb Korma. Neither dish was remarkable in fact there was really no discernable flavor difference. The fact that the CTM was fire engine red was a shock and turnoff. The korma was decent though not worth going back for. The CTM was awful. The naan was good!
