At Downtown Portland/City Center's India House is a treasure-trove of delicacies for diners. There is a lot offered inside the city storefront, which is only steps from MAX. Do not worry if you miss lunch, because the same goodies are offered up as affordable appetizers and entrees at dinner. Try the Chicken Saag, a tasty dish with spinach, as well as delightful tandoori delicacies. There is a full bar, as well as some rare Eastern beers. The pleasant interiors offer plenty of seating for group diners.

Skip it – This was our first experience of curry in Portland and it was quite frankly a worry. Both being seasoned curry lovers having grown up in London and Yorkshire, travel regularly to India, we were disappointed with the fare at the India House. The place was doing brisk business but we couldn?t figure out why. All the dishes tasted the same, covered in a mediocre gravy. How come this place gets an average 4+ star average, when the individual scores ad up to a median of 3.3?
not terrible, but very bad – Way over priced. This place is really just a typical Indian restaurant. Mediocre food. Nothing unique, has all the usual dishes. Worst of all rather small portions and a high price. Try Tandoor in downtown where the food is better, the portions greater and the prices lower. Don't believe the hype about this place. Money grubbing owner, perhaps.
Mediocre Indian food marred by cheap owner. – We stopped at this India House last night as it was right on the Max line downtown. The food was alright. I've certianly had better in Seattle. The Chicken Tikka Marsala was *really* red, which to me indicated artificial coloring. The naan was fresh and warm. What soured us on the experience was what appears to be a very cheap (penny wise, pound foolish) owner. First, sauce dishes came out dirty and obviously reserved. Not a huge deal, we thought. After eating, I asked to take ho... read more
Lousy customer service – After we were seated, we have to wait for like 20 minutes until our waitress came to our table. Then it took another 15 minutes before she took our order. We almost left the place after waiting for so long. It seems like there were only 2 people wait the tables (they were completely understaffed). The curry was not that flavorful, it's very heavy to taste. However, I think they did a pretty good on the Dahl. It was well seasoned. After we finished our meal, a gentleman (we believed that maybe he was ... read more
Lacks Indian Flavors!! – We visited India House for dinner enroute to Seattle and weren't quite sure what to expect as first timers in Portland. We started with the sweet lassi and mango lassi. Both were good given the quality of indian beverages available in the US. The waitress next brought in a trio of condiments -- which were all good and different compared to the condiments at other Indian Restaurants. We assumed they were for papad/pappadums as is the norm in most places. But there were none coming. We expected the foo... read more
nothing to write home about – I read the reviews on the place before my husband and I went and I agree with the one saying it was okay but not craveable. I love indian food, but do not have much experience in Portland to compare it with. I can actually cook better Indian food than India House. Frankly its just terribly average, but it did satisfy a curiosity about the place. I went mostly because they have the dishes that I love most, but I was disappointed when I tasted them. In fact, the dhal makhani dish was actually not ... read more
Editorial Review by Mary Morley – Downtown Indian restaurant caters to business lunchers during the day with a buffet, and couples and families at night with tasty entrees.
This is great Indian cuisine – Food was great. Didn't have to wait for seat. Great variety. Very flavorful. Would definitely go again for buffet.
I keep hoping it will get better... – My husband and I have been to India House many times. Each meal has been pretty good, but not what I'd call "craveable". Considering the high price of the dishes, and the fact that you have to pay for the rice and naan separately, we just expect something better. The main problem with my dishes (vegetarian) are that the taste is decent but too mild. Tonight I ordered a mushroom dish and it had a surprisingly small amount of mushrooms (maybe a total of two mushrooms that were sliced up) d... read more
