I’ve eaten Indian food in India and probably 20 other countries and this is definitely one of my favorite places EVER!!!!! I have dreams about their mango milkshakes!!!!!!! They blow my mind!!!!! The little restaurant is super cute and very Portland-ie, the service is amazing, it’s cheap and the garlic naan will knock your socks off. Go for their lunch buffet for sure!

Sheer waste of money.. Stale and tasteless food.. these people even charge two dollars for popadum and the same amount for half a piece of raw onion.. we ordered dal which was greasy and stale, lamb was pathetically tasteless with only red chilly powder as only spice and naan that was perhaps made in the 18th century.. there were 2 old drunk men, apparently the owner and his friend, talking loudly in some foul language at the back..the owners of this place are probably from pakistan and definitely dont know anything about In... read more

Favorite restaurant! – We have been going to India House for years and this is probably our favorite Portland restaurant. The owner, Tony, is very involved in the business and truly cares about the quality of the food and service. We have taken countless friends here to try Indian food for their first time and we have created many fans! I have had these guys cater everything from my wedding to my 40th birthday party and they are amazing! If you don't like spicy food, this may not be your place, even though EVERYTHING can be ... read more

Staff told a lie and served left over food – I am visiting Portland this week with my family. Today June 12-2011, after a hike to Beacon Rock, we were quite late for lunch per se. In spite of the hunger, we decided not to go to a fast food restaurant along the way. Instead, we wanted to eat at a nice desi (south asian) restaurant and hence ended up at India House in Down Town Portland. The sign board said that they are "OPEN" even though it was already 3:30pm. A couple was eating at the restaurant. Still, my wife asked if th... read more

Some of the best I have had – Being a fan of Indian food, I have had the opportunity to try Indian restaurants from across the country and the UK. I find the India House in Portland to be one of my favorites. Their food is authentic and the taste is superb. I have to add that for those on this forum who “found the food too spicy,” it is in reality prepared just right--unless you are accustom to the cuisine at Applebee’s. This restaurant indeed has a loyal following.

From what I could taste of it the food was decent – Food was way too freaking spicy. I asked for medium, it was beyond the spiciest dish I have ever had, so spicy I could hardly eat my meal. The rice didnt come with the entree, and the naan was served in very small portions. I will definitely go to Swagat next time, better food, better value.

Thoroughly average – I've eaten at India House twice and been underwhelmed both times. It's not that it's bad exactly - the food is decent and the service has been fine. However, the atmosphere feels crowded (the tables are close together), and the quality of the food just isn't that great for the price. I think East India Co. (which is nearby) is a better value with much better food and atmosphere.

Pay A Lot Eat a Little – India House offers more than the 'usual suspects' at every other Indian restaurants such as curry or vindaloo. OTOH you pay (a lot) for everything. A small portion of naan was almost $7. You pay extra for very dry tasteless rice and the main dishes were served in small pans. OTOH the service was excellent and the food (what there was of it) was very tasty. The Max rattles the walls and floors adding to the ambiance....yikes! Not a place for a relaxing or romantic dinner.

rice NOT included.... – So when i moved here from the midwest i thought there would be loads of great indian food to be found, but it seemed i was wring, i did not like any of the places i had been. but i tried this placed and liked it, didnt love it, but liked it. the food that is...the prices are usually a couple bucks more per entree than other indian restaurants, and you have to pay for rice...which is strange, i have been to lots of indian restaurants, never paid for rice. i have been here several times, decided to stop... read more
