Many believe that Abe Doumar, founder of Doumar's Cones & Barbecue, gave the world its first ice cream cone. Doumar was a traveling salesman retailing paperweights at the famous St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. When an ice cream seller exhausted his stock of paper dishes to hold the ice creams, he got a nearby waffle maker to roll his waffles into cones and thus invented the waffle cone. Love their barbecue sandwiches and limeades!
You have to visit if you are in Norfolk. The ice cream, the cone, limeade, bbq, and burgers are amazing. The experience is also very fun. A well oiled machine.
I guess I should go more often but the whole drive in atmosphere throws me off. love the ice cream cones especially the buttered pecan ice cream.
Classic chow, great history, and fun experience
My husband and I tried Doumars today for the first time. Not impressed. The waitress was not friendly, gave us our check without even asking if we wanted dessert. Overheard the table next to us ask for a refill and all she said was we dont do refills and walked away, didn't even bother asking if the customer would like to purchase another. Definitely not a pleasant waitress at all. Neither of us cared much for our food, hubby had the steak sandwich and I had a cheeseburger.
