How the Scouting leadership has handled the situation involving Ames Mayfield is appalling. Forcing him out of his den for respectfully asking a question about gun-related domestic violence goes against several principles you are suppose to be teaching these kids! The den leader should be removed and Ames should be reinstated. And the Denver Area Council should turn this into a learning opportunity for the whole pack. I urge you to right this wrong!
"Prepared. For Life." That is your motto and you are not living up to it. A young man tried to raise himself up to this standard, and you shut him out. For Life. For your politics.
Your deplorable action regarding brave Cub Scout Ames Mayfield, for merely exercising his First Amendment rights, shines a spotlight on you in an unkindly and most viral fashion. Does this not smack of hypocrisy, given your alleged principles? You should applaud his thirst for answers and his ability to ask what should NOT be hard questions of scared and cowardly legislators. To Ames Mayfield and his mother, Lori Mayfield: Bravo. To Ames' former Cub Scout pack and den "leaders" and Colorado state senator Vicki Marble: Cowardo. Shamefulo. If the Boy Scouts of America wants to show true leadership and commitment to Scouting's stated ideals, it must remove from power the "responsible" pack and den "leaders" in this unforgivable fiasco immediately and restore Ames Mayfield to membership in his original Cub Scout den at once, with a full, public, and abject apology.

I'm not surprised to see the nationalism/fascism here. Boys should be raised to think intelligently and question those who need to be questioned. Scouting should be about learning to survive and respect the environments they hike through and becoming responsible adults. Not becoming silent purveyors of conservative doctrine. I say this as a preachers kid, a Choctaw descendant, and a survivor of sexual advances as an eleven year old by an assistant scout master in a troop in Manhattan Kansas in 1981. My classmate wasn't so lu... read more
