The tavern that rose from two fires to be the oldest restaurant in all of the town, is worth going to see based on History alone. The food, too, is a delicious range of traditional, home-cooked fare, made from scratch. The buffet menu offers a different variety of dishes each day and the numerous pies for dessert are a truly mouthwatering end to the meal. There is an event hall that seats up to 150 people. You can also pick up a couple of souvenirs to remember the trip from the small shop before you leave.

I was so hoping for homemade coconut cream pie, I am almost 100% sure it was from Sysco and frozen previously. My pork tenderloin was fabulous and huge.
The Friday Fish Buffet was really, really good and more than worth the $$. Our waiters Mike and (sorry guy with pretty blue eyes & man bun) were awesome meeting the needs of our party of 12! Would definitely go back again.
This place is an awesome experience from excellent buffet to even better pie, havent had a piece of pie this good, since my grandma's been gone. The owner was such a nice man, he stopped by our table more than one time to visit and make sure we were enjoying our meal.. Generous portions at a good price. Great ambiance, with all the antiques and history. Superb service Would definitely stop in again on our next trip to this gorgeous area.
Country atmosphere with very friendly, hard working staff. The best buffet I think I've ever had! Everything was delicious, the food was hot and the pie was spectacular!!! Wish we would have found this four years ago when my daughter started college in Dubuque. We'll have to make a detour on our way to visit her in Ames!

so i thought today for mothers day i take my wife out for dinner at Breitbachs Country Dinner in Balltown iowa . we drive the hour and a half sometimes because we love the great country buffet food . so i checked the facebook page and they open till 10 pm . we arrive there around 5.30 barely any cars in the parking lot . we get out of the car and a gentleman ask us u guys here for food i replied yes he said . they closed they had so much going on today at lunchtime they closed at 4.30pm ... what a bummer ... disappointed
