The tavern that rose from two fires to be the oldest restaurant in all of the town, is worth going to see based on History alone. The food, too, is a delicious range of traditional, home-cooked fare, made from scratch. The buffet menu offers a different variety of dishes each day and the numerous pies for dessert are a truly mouthwatering end to the meal. There is an event hall that seats up to 150 people. You can also pick up a couple of souvenirs to remember the trip from the small shop before you leave.

We went there to eat their awesome homemade pie yesterday on our bikes.and found out pie isn't served on Sundays since they're closed on Mondays, so we said "we rode from Waterloo to eat the pie" so we had strawberry short cake and we went to pay the bill and it was on the house since we rode such a distance...THANKS. woohoo!! I've eaten there before, best buffet!!!
The tenderloin sandwich was huge! And so tasty! Their peach pie reminded me of my grandmother's. But the best part of our first time visit to this place was the people! All so friendly and we were taken care of by Mike and Ben - what a treat those two were!! We're planning to go there again in October.
Mickey & I along with Tony & Sherry were lucky enough to be together in Dubuque for a 50th plus wedding anniversary Mass with the Archbishop at St Raphael Cathedral and having never been to Balltown, Tony offered to take us there to enjoy a super buffet that was offered. The meal was fantastic and we then enjoyed some wine tasting next door and purchased a couple bottles to take home. A block away was the most amazing scenic overlook I have ever seen. We all had a wonderful day to spend together.
4 of us went to Breitbach's for lunch yesterday. Everything was fantastic from the waiter to the buffet. The pie was absolutely delicious. If I lived closer I would be there every day. Awesome
Our server Jessy, was so nice and friendly, the service was excellent. We had the German buffet. The food was excellent. The snickers pie was amazing! Mike came and introduced himself, asked where we were from and found out we have a mutual friend from our hometown. Who'd of thought! We will definitely be back and will tell everyone.
The $12 a person lunch buffet consisted of food from cans. The mashed potatoes were instant potatoes. There was no fruit available, except for the tiny bits found in the whipped-cream-substitute salad. Our $1.50 sodas cost extra and were in cans, so no offer of refills. No dessert available on the buffet. The only other patrons seemed to be locals with very limited perspectives. Some were overheard using the "n" word, while others clearly showed disgust for one of the members of our family who happens to have a disability. W... read more
