Just OK – I went to Bouley last night with my wife and we each had the tasting menu. We were quite let down by the whole experience at Bouley. In addition to being expensive ($95 per person), the experience was just ordinary and I've had much better dinners elsewhere in NY . The tasting menu was 5 courses, two of which were desserts and the choices for the other courses were heavy on the fish. There is no steak on the tasting menu for the $95 price but you can upgrade for an extra $45 to get 2 pieces of strip steak as one of... read more
Disappointing – My husband and I came here for our one year anniversary dinner. It was disappointing from the moment we walked in. When we were escorted to the table, I observed an insect (pretty large) crawling from underneath one of the dinner plates on the table. The hostess, who seemed young and inexperienced, tried to cover it up. We moved tables but nothing else was said about it. I expected someone to come over and apologize since we were about to pay for an expensive meal at what has been labeled one of the finest re... read more
Little value for money – This was our first experience with Manhattan restaurants. As Europeans, just returning from a trip to Lyon, France, we expected more than we got. Service was fine, although we asked for a pause after the entree so we could finish our wine before dessert and coffee, and this was just neglected. I think the food was too fusion. I had a panache of 3 different things, one was a shrimp with a coquille, and the other foie gras. That just did not taste well together. My entree was veal. That was fine, but n... read more
Worst waiter experience ever – I must admit the food there is quite good, and I had a very memorable lunch experience there a couple of months ago, and was REALLY looking forward to my tasting menu dinner there. The service by my waiter however so marred my experience that I don't feel like I ever want to go back there again. There was a misunderstanding with the menu and my order was not what I expected, which led to the waiter being very frustrated, which was fine, everyone is entitled to feel frustrated - but to express h... read more
So Bad – My husband and I love good food, especially French, so he took me to the restaurant for my birthday. We were both soooo disappointed. We ordered the tasting menu, the appetizer was too salty and the main course had no taste ( we had to use salt & pepper)! The bread was left uncovered and tasted stale. The waiters were hovering beside our table so we were very uncomfortable and had no privacy to set a romantic mood. We were also very disappointed that some people were in jeans and sneakers, took away from the night .... read more
Excellent, But Have Had Better – My wife and I enjoy trying tasting menus at various higher-end restaurants; some recent choices have been Eleven Madison Park (EMP) and Gilt, so this review is in comparisons to EMP, one of our best dining experiences. Overall, Bouley was excellent, but not quite EMP. The quality of the space and interior was exceptional. In the foyer, we were greeted by the scent of real apples that lined the hallway, leading up to a curved, nicely detailed door. The interior space was plush, somewhat dark, ... read more
Wonderful dining experience, ignore the griping – I am trying to figure out why my experience was so positive considering some of the complaints by other reviewers. Two things: there were not a lot of people there at 5PM on a weekday so we got great attention and we are teetotalers and much of the complaining has to do with the wine selection and service. I am not naive and found things to criticize about Jean Georges and Masa but I found the food, service and decor to be expemplary. I was wowed on entering the crimson room ... read more
Not worth it... – I took my boyfriend out to dinner at Bouley... I was underwhelmed...We got the pri fixe dinner, which might have been a mistake. The best part of the meal what when the bread cart went around. I think that there are more places that have a better atmosphere and quality food than this restuarant....but to each his own.
Warmth, elegance, and delectable cuisine – I was in the neighborhood tonight (a Tuesday) and wanted a quiet place to read my New Yorker. I dropped in at 10pm without reservations. They seemed happy to see me and sat me at a cozy table in a corner. From start to finish, the experience was engrossing but relaxing at the same time. 4 or 5 very friendly servers appeared throughout the evening at just the right time with perfectly prepared dishes (favorites were the philo encrusted shrimp, baby pig entree, and "frivolous" chocola... read more
