I searched for a car to take from Chicago to New York and Avis quoted a price with a detailed list of fees and gave an estimated total. It said that "extra miles" would be charged at 20 cents per mile. I assumed they calculated in some kind of minimum or expected milage to New York as part of the quoted price. However, when I got to New York, they charged me $400 more than the estimated total they quoted me. Do not rent from Avis, They give you a quote when you make a reservation and do not disclose additional fees. They add a $200.00 fee for incidentals which is refunded but why do they even need to take that fee. They were under staffed & then one of the staff members left while there were still 5 people in line. The clerk we had pushed us into buying the Toll Package because she could not tell us with the processing fees would be if you went through a toll, and they dont even refund the money if you never use a toll. First time renting and last time, horrible experience. Booked way in advance, confirmation of car requested, payment was reserved. Arrived to Bakersfield airport not the car I reserved, would not accept my card I reserved with and run it as credit. Representative smirked at me and advised me if I was at convenience store or grocer my card would be accepted. I was appalled. My son had to use his card, same bank issued cards. Very unprofessional and disrespectful.

The EZ-Fuel policy is the worst policy. It is not a service to opt-out of when you pick up the car. If you drive less than 75 miles, you are charged a flat fee about twice the amount you pay in gas. Only way around it is to show a fuel receipt at drop off but if the people are late (return at 5:05 when open at 5) how are you expecting customers to get the fee removed. Customers...scrutinize your return receipt for hidden charges you are not told about up-front.

Working with Avis has been a complete nightmare. Not only did they cancel my reservation and leave me stranded at the Calgary Airport with no options to get to where I needed to go. They proceeded to charge me for a no show fee when they cancelled the reservation. When I tried to call they told me they were not responsible for the charge and I needed to call someone else. Absolute nightmare to do business with and will not ever use them in the future. Customer beware!

Company will rent out already damaged vehicles. They do not thoroughly inspect the vehicles when they get returned. I rented from the Bishops International Airport in Flint, MI in July. After about 30 minutes on the highway the small sun seemed to have some hesitation issues. Shortly a light came on the dash but we made it to our hotel destination. Avis Monterey, CA airport: Worst rental experience of my life. Rented an economy size Mazda SUV for two days. Long story short, the rental was quoted right around $150/day. Returned it with less than 200 miles on it, full tank of gas, and we were forced to drop the keys in their lockbox because they only had one person at the desk, and a line of 10+ customers. In Portland, Maine on 10/9/21 there was no way to reserve a rental car. I tried all the other companies. On 10/7/21, my father's wife passed away unexpectedly and had no other option to fly to Portland's Airport without knowing how I was going to get to his house 1.5 hrs away. To my delight, Avis had a car. (Apparently one of the only companies that did).
