About this business

Our restaurant shares a name with the highway that runs from Naples to Canosa, Puglia. True to our namesake, we gather our inspiration from southern Italy, particularly Campania, the region surrounding Naples. Chef David Taylor oversees the menu, which features fresh pasta, house-butchered and house-cured meats and authentic Neapolitan pizza. Complementing the rustic menu, Wine Director/owner Shelley Lindgren selects wines that highlight the indigenous grapes from Campania and nearby regions. Since we opened A16 in February,... read more

TRIPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – first off: ORDER THE TRIPE. it was bananas. i'm mexican and i have tripe (in the form of menudo) all the time, but NEVER EVER EVER EVER like this. the tripe at A16 is my new favorite dish ANYWHERE. i won't bother trying to use flowery foodie landuage to describe it. just take it from someone who's had tripe about 100 times in his life (about 100 times more than the average person) : JUST DO IT. other notables: the rosemary beef, the potatoes w/marjoram and celery, clam pizza, pizza margherita.

Thoroughly Unimpressed – After hearing so many good things about A-16, I couldnt wait to have dinner there last night. Our reservation was for 8:30 but the hostess informed us that they were running late and we could wait at the bar for our table to be ready. At 9:25p, they ended up forcing our party of 4 to sit at two tables pushed together in the hallway leading to the dining room, forcing one person to sit at each end of the table- this made any type of conversation impossible. The server was curt and the atmosphere was p... read more

wow – i cannot believe how much i liked this restaurant. the pizza was perfect, little toppings fresh tasting tomato sauce. the other dishes were also good. it was so refreshing to see a menu in the united states that did not bastardize italian food with too many ingredients or creative ideas. the whole experience felt like being in italy, casual, comfortable and affordable. i was certain the owners would be italian but to my surprise they are american although they have spent time in italy learning the food and culture. the... read more

Authentic Italian – From top to bottom, a superlative experience. Wine list is constructed by someone who knows what they are doing and is very fairly priced to boot. Pork and tripe are not to be missed. The fava bean puree starter is highly recommended as well. Service was very personable and efficient. People who are used to eating only Americanized Italian may be put off by the menu but people who really love Italian food will be very happy A16 has opened in San Francisco.

Buonissimo! – I totally disagree with the luke warm reviews, specially the person complaining about his olive and anchovy pizza having no cheese. What did he expect? It is supposed to be that way. Pizza with seafood or fish does not have cheese in Italy and the menu describes each ingredient on the pizza. If he would have read the menu, he would have noticed that the Margarita and mushroom pizza have cheese listed as ingredients. Totally fresh and flavorful food. Serving wines in a half bottle carafe is brilliant since I oft... read more

Superb – Some of the best service in the city. Our server was friendly, prompt and he new the menu inside and out. The food is totally fresh, healthy and satisfying. Simple, yes, delicious, for sure. I cannot get enough of that clam and cauliflower appetizer and I used to not even like cauliflower. My partner and I do not even mind braving the yuppies in the Marina for food this good. The wine list is fabulous with more wines by the glass than I could count. We have been there two times in one week and will be back within a ... read more

Very Italian – I travel to Italy four times a year and until A16 there was no restaurant in San Francisco that truly reminded me of Italy. The pizzas took me back to Naples. They have slightly charred/burnt crust as they should and were sparsely topped. Finally, a pizza where the crust stands on its own and were creative toppings do not dominate. Excellent! It is clear that this restaurant spares no expense on ingredients since the flavors of each ingredient come through, specially the flavor of the beef in the roasted sirlo... read more

Go for wine and apps, but that's it – Not such a great experience, probably due to novice restauranteurs. And it wasn't unbearable by any means. The wine was good and the atmosphere alive and enjoyable. Dinner was another story. Perhaps the verbiage needed work, or the selection left some to be desired, but we all stared at our menus for 10 minutes without inspiration. After being sold by our waiter on an appetizer, we were later informed they'd run out. Starving, we inquired why our table hadn't been given a breadbasket yet... read more

Needs work – For the value, A16 is a winner. Decent food and wine at good prices. Service is the big negative point. Don't bother making a reservation since there is no way you will be seated in under 30 min. of your reservation time. In a group of four, we received one appentizer after the rest had entrees served. Pizzas are hit or miss.
