The "13 Coins" name is of Peruvian origin. The story goes that a poor young man loved and wished to marry a wealthy girl. Her father asked what he had to offer for his daughter's hand in marriage. The young man reached into his pocket. He had only 13 coins, but assured the father he could pledge undying love, care and concern. The father was so touched, he gave his daughter's hand and "13 Coins" has come to symbolize unyielding love, care and concern.

Overpriced-Bad Food – Yes, it is open 24 hours, but that's about all it has going for it. The food is awful, and it is way way way overpriced. Don't go here unless you are with a group and absolutely have to.
Seattle's original upscale diner, serving 24 hours a day since 1967. – In Short Visitors find privacy in high-backed booths and counter stools, all of which are padded in Rat Pack-era tufted dark-brown leatherette and accented with low lights. The counter seats are perfect for watching the cooks grill steaks and flip omelettes. Favorites include the steamed clams in pesto broth, any of the frittatas or omelettes, the American fries and a hamburger or cheeseburger; every meal is preceded by a complimentary antipasto platter.
Creepy outside, Lovely inside – Yes this place may seem dark and creepy and is located in what seems to be a dead end road, but once you're inside, the food and the service is amazing. You wouldn't think a place that offers 24 hour dining would have much to offer... see Jack in the Box and Denny's. But 13 Coins is a nice place to dine, to take someone on a date, to go for drinks, or just to go to eat casually. They have a huge selection of food. I haven't tried everything, but the steaks are amazing and their Creme Brulee is... read more
Insultingly bad food – 13 Coins have mastered the art of destroying simple, healthy breakfasts. My spinach omelet was swimming in a pool of oil, and contained a gross lumpy bechamel sauce. And they had the guts to charge $10 for ruining some eggs. My friend had the worst eggs benedict he's ever had: greasy bread, wilted tomatoes. Even the coffee tasted like socks. We were frankly insulted that they'd offer this and then ask for money for it. A total disgrace.
Craptacular... – Had the halibut with broccoli, it was bad...fishy expensive and bad. Had a salad that was quite nice. The service was slllllllooooooooowww, but friendly. I won't be going again any time soon.
Good thing they are open late (for them anyway) – I've eaten here twice after operas and the food was terrible both times. I had spaghetti once that was cold paired with incredibly watery marinara sauce. The second time I had fish and chips which was also cold and rubbery. I believe the the average price for these delicacies was roughly $16 each. I do like the ambience here and I suppose coming for a late night drink would be ok.
How have they got away with it all these years? – Well...I read the reviews, but decided to give it a try for myself. I had a cup of vegetable beef soup (a tea cup) practically all broth and tasted like it was from a can. I ordered Linguini with Dungenous crab sauce that consisted of Spahetti al fredo topped with grated parmesan cheese. There was so much cheese it was unbearable, and the crab was cold crab meat in the center top of the plate (not mixed in or made with the sauce). My date had Rainbow Trout that was very salty... read more
A my not getting something? – For $80 we got well; Nothing. bad calamari, cooked vegetables ... oh wait there was chicken there some where underneath, that tasted like, well cooked chicken. Also this is the only restaurant that managed to spoil Crem Brule. On the positive note they do great coffe, too bad they are not in that business.
better after dark? – before an event, i took a large group of my friends here for dinner, beforehand raving about the atmosphere and the fun i have had before. we did make reservations and were able to compromise with the manager about a few things. everything was going well, however communicating with the waiter was difficult because of his abnoxious humor treating us as if we were children. also, what he recommended, i had never tried before so i decided to do so.... chicken parmigana? yuck. under the sauce was a breaded c... read more
