Le Sanctuaire d'Avebury, sur Overton Hill, est un mystérieux monument Néolithique datant d'environ 2500 av. J.-C. Initialement cercles de poteaux en bois, puis de pierres, il servait probablement à des rites funéraires, comme en attestent les ossements humains découverts. Relié à Avebury par l'Avenue de West Kennet, il offre une vue imprenable sur le paysage sacré, malgré ses marqueurs en béton modernes.

Vor ungefähr 5.000 Jahren wurde an dieser Stelle eine Megalithanlage errichtet. In der Nähe befinden sich die Steinkreise von Avebury, das Langgrab West Kennet Long Barrow und der Silbury Hill. Es handelt sich um eine Rekonstruktion. Die Originalanlage wurde vollkommen zerstört. An Stelle der früheren stehen Betonmsrkierungen. Diese zeigen die Stellen an, wo in der Vergangenheit Steine und Holzpfosten standen.

Interessanter Ort, der dazu beiträgt, die Zusammenhänge hier in Avebury zu verstehen. Schade, dass keine Original-Steine erhalten sind.

A stone and timber circle near the village of Avebury in the south-western English county of Wiltshire. Excavation has revealed the location of the 58 stone sockets and 62 post-holes. The ring was part of a tradition of stone circle construction that spread throughout much of Britain, Ireland, and Brittany during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age, over a period between 3300 and 900 BCE.
