Amazing Sushi - Great Service! – Last week I took my girlfriend out to the Happy Sumo before a Jazz game (they lost) and was surprised by how quick they got our rolls out (lollipop and Vegas) to us after we told our server we're trying to make the game. Great spot for a date, they seem to care about their customers. The sushi was good as always... the lollipop roll is what it's all about.

User review by sdlouie – The service was very slow and the waiters weren't very attentive. The food was okay, but the ambience was fantastic

Better alternatives in Salt Lake for Sushi – I generally am not compelled to write reviews but our lunch experience today is worthy of print for those of you considering sushi alternatives in Salt Lake. Happy Sumo was at one time a pleasant experience but has since suffered from long order wait times and down right rude service. While SLC is not a Seattle or Boston, one should expect prompt, friendly service and reasonable preparation time. Today, I waited over an hour and a half for sushi and had to remind our server severa... read more

Great Food, Great Waitress, Slower Service – The sushi was magnificant, great cuts of meet, thoughtfully shaped. The sushi rolls were bite sized (as they should be), the nigiri sushi was amazing. We waited for about 1.5 hours for our food (the night was packed, and we came towards closing time), but our waitress was kind enough to bring us some soy pods to eat from while we waited. It sounds like our order got lost in the shuffle, but they made up for it, with the soy nuts, and the sushi was well worth the wait. Ambiance was... read more

Amazing Sushi! – Being from California, I've tried all kinds of sushi restaurants but I've never experienced one like the Happy Sumo. The food was incredible, everyone was friendly and the atmosphere had a great vibe. They had the best music, most inventive rolls and one of the best people watching patios I've ever been on. We need one of these in Cali!

A stylishly casual sushi restaurant that outshines its chain neighbors in the Gateway. – The Scene The chic dining room is inviting, with sunny walls, large windows, chenille banquettes and colorful earthenware plates. Sit at the sushi bar and watch the chefs, or tuck into a secluded booth--perfect for a romantic date. Service is friendly. The Food Start off with a bowl of flavorful miso soup then dive right into the sushi menu. About 20 varieties of nigiri sushi are offered (two bite-sized pieces of fish, each served on ric... read more

good food – Besides waiting for an hour to be seated on a Saturday night, the waitress was very nice but slow. She took our orders, but didn't see her again for awhile. Appetizers took a long time to arrive but was worth the wait. Same with the entrees. If you go on a weekend night, make sure you have time to wait around. Both to be seated and waited on. Other than that, the food is great

Not your average sushi – Happy Sumo surpasses every sushi place I have tried. My husband even tried it and really liked it, and he is NOT a sushi fan. Great combinations and a lot of wonderful flavors that really enhance one another. The saki is great too! ! I highly recommend it!

Worth the Wait? – They don't take reservations, and the hostess was rude to us. Don't tell us the wait is 45 minutes, and then when we come back say that it'll be 30 minutes more. It's only worth the wait if your not hungry, because by the time you're done waiting you'll be starving. I can't say it's romantic because it's so loud and noisy.
