hooked. – I ate sushi for the very first time, this weekend at the happy sumo. I admit I was a bit nervous, because I didn't really understand the sushi menu, and was a bit iffy about eating raw fish. I was so fortunate to have my server actually spend the time to educate me on sushi and all the varieties of fish they had. She started me out with a california roll, and then the Playboy(my favorite) and Vegas roll. It was some of the best food I've ever had in my life. I've gone from a first timer, to "hooked" and a definate ... read more
Open one in California! – While in Salt Lake City for a convention last week, the Happy Sumo was recommended by at least 10 fellow convention goers. I checked it out and was not disappointed. However, it was nothing like I imagined. Being from Los Angeles where there's practically a sushi bar on every street, I expected something either very authentic (mom & pop type) or something totally mod like a night club, which seems to be the trend for most of the newer sushi bars opening in my town. I really enjoyed the Happy Sumo's ... read more
yummy in salt lake city! – I travel to Utah every year for the outdoor retailer show; and every year, I make it a point to eat at the happy sumo. It is, by far, my favorite restaurant in Salt Lake City. The atmosphere is cozy, the service is warm and friendly, and the sushi is out of this world. It is my personal goal to try all of your house specialty rolls. Every one so far has been incredible. Thank you Happy Sumo for yet another successful and DELICIOUS trip. Cheers!!
worth the wait... – My family and I have been going to The Happy Sumo for over two years. We are always happy with what we get. My teenagers order the less traditional fried rolls, and my wife and I order more traditional sashimi plates. As replied to meanie65, if you spent more time reviewing the menu or asking the server about the more traditional items, that's what you would had recieved. If The Happy Sumo was like all the other traditional sushi bars then it wouldn't be needed and the crowds show to differ. Sushi is made... read more
Pleeeesssseeee. – I took my daughter in for her 19th birthday. Lets just stay the only thing Japanese in this restaurant last night was me and my kids. Please don't be fooled by the crowds of hip, non-Asians with a lot of money, having fun. This place was pathetic and sad to call it a Japanese Restaurant. At least call it Japanese inspired at best. Some of the sushi was great, one order I had was a big, ball of orange-who-knows-what, but my suspicions say some of it was Velveeta. mmmmm. smooth. I don't know if that was the r... read more
Great Sushi, Bad service – I love going to Happy Sumo everytime we get the chance to go down Salt Lake city, their sushi's are great and they have the best tempura in town but I really didn't like the service. Our sushi didn't get out till 40 minutes later because apparently our waitress forgot to give the people the ticket. And when we got our check it was overpriced!! They charged us for 3 other entrees we never ordered and the waitress was acting like she didn't want to be there. Bad service, great food. Not such a good c... read more
This is my number 1 place to go in SLC! I've been a lot of places, and lived a lot of other places -and in SLC - the happy sumo is probably the best! I never sit at a table, always the bar - but the services from the chefs is always excellent; not to mention they all have a ton of personality - which says a lot in comparison to other sushi places around town. The regular servers can be a bit absent, but frankly, I'm not going there for them, nor do I hardly ever order anything other than sushi. The prices of the rolls seem t... read more
Great food... bring your backup wallet! – This place has great food. The Sushi is great, but the menu is so large it took forever to pick something to eat. We ate so much food we got sick. The Dragon Scales are to die for. The shrimp tempura was over-battered, as they used a different batter than the excellent tempura for the fish and vegetables. Service was a lacking. The waitress (Sarah)disappeared for long periods of time. Food took a long time to arrive, even though there were only 10 people in the restaurant. Lunch for ... read more
Best sushi ever – Happy Sumo is one of my all time favorite dining places in the USA! One of the best sushi spots ever (trust me, I travel A LOT and I'm NOT from SLC!)! It's hip, located in a great place, the food is delicious, and the service is great. The only downside is that you have to wait a long time especially weekends for dinner to be seated. Also, no reservations, but of course you can shop until ur table is ready and they will call you on your cell. Not only do they serve traditional sushi, but creative ones with ... read more
