No animal should be put through numerous seizures. Specialists should be specialized and know how to treat when a seizure is a sign that the body needs to be in its most quite state to reboot blood flow after liver shunt surgery. Why didn’t your highly specialized hospital know this gentle protocol? Education is key and a pre-emptive directive would have been life saving. The solution was simple: A short note in his chart stating: if brought to the ER with seizures this is the body saying I need to be in shutdown mode while ... read more

Recent handling of kitty with a common post-surgical complication was met with poor protocol and loss of life :( Kitty was recovering well from recent liver shunt placement when seizures began. This is an anticipated complication and it could and should have been treated with 12-24 hours of light sedation giving the brain time to "reboot" itself. After this time, a prophylactic anti-seizure medication can be used. This was not followed, despite it being a common protocol. Instead, the staff seeming unaware or uneducated, all... read more

My sister brought her daughter's cat, September, to Blue Pearl for surgery on 8/26/19. September suffered postoperative complications, not uncommon. Blue Pearl staff was called throughout the week regarding the warning signs of this complications and she was continually told to "increase" or "decrease" pain medication. On 8/29/19, September began seizing and was taken back to Blue Pearl where he was give multiple sedatives but no seizure medication which is the standard protocol for this postoperative complication. September... read more

My friends baby kitten is no longer here due to uneducated vets. And worse yet a simple solution could have prevented this. Her children are heartbroken as is she. Not even an attempt to find a answer. I’m heartbroken for this poor family and her baby that will never grow old with a loving family. A life cut short by negligence! No animal should be put through numerous seizures. By putting a note in the chart regarding if surgical complications occur such as seizures, here is the protocol to follow: administer Keppra. If not brought under control 12-24 hours of propofol then Keppra. OR for post surgical complications, when the owner is calling daily - say "come in I want to see him" instead of having a tech rely messages with an 8 hour delayed response time. If in doubt, ask the owner to bring him in without socking them with all the cots associated with an ER visit. Other ways to improve, never let... read more
