Tried to open an account with Penfed and ran into continual problems with ID verification. They asked multiple times for proof of ID which I submitted online. Reps asked for copies of docs that Penfed had already confirmed by email they had received. They also accessed my credit report just to open a savings account. That’s ridiculous! After five days I abandoned the process and opened an account with another bank. Don’t waste any time interacting with Penfed

Pretty much the worst financial institution I have dealt with. I am just waiting for the insurance charge on my loan to be removed so that I can close my account and move my car note somewhere else. Quite a number of confused individuals from the loan dept to the insurance department. I refinanced my truck that had been parked for over a year. The insurance had expired. I'm only giving 2 stars because the rate I got for my refinance couldn't be beat. Other than that, I'd never refinance with PenFed again, especially as a first time refinancer. The process is not simple and there are a lot of questions for a first timer. Communication was bleak at best. It took at least a week to hear back on basic questions and even then, only some questions were answered after I'd send a 3rd email and copy the manager of the officer assigned to my loan. My wife and I tried working with PenFed 3 separate times to secure mortgage refinances an 2 SC condominiums, as well as a HELOC on another. Short and not so sweet: they may be good with auto loans (which I was able to secure), but take my advice and DO NOT try to get a mortgage! I am currently on a home refinance. It's been 2 months I paid for my appraisal a month and a half ago. I've been transfer to three processor. The service is horrible. The rates apear to be are great though. The appraisal hasn't been done. I was told it was in underwriting a month and a half ago and then got bounce to a different processor. These guys keep reporting a loan to the credit bureaus as delinquent even though it has been paid on time.

I have been a member of PenFed Credit Union for a number of years (over 10 years), during most of that time I have transferred funds between the credit union and my external bank, never once was I unable to receive the funds that I deposited into PenFed due to the lack of a credit check. I should not have to have my credit ran to receive funds that I have deposited into my account. I ask for a used car loan with these people. I waited and waited and no responses, no calls no emails, nothing. I call them everyday their response was you are still being reviewed. We started a refinance in May. After the initial beginning of the process customer service was dismal! First we faxed information and was told by the processor that it didn’t come in right and he needed the information in pdf. The initial email from the processor said he would be in contact weekly.
