Such is the popularity of this Northwest Portland institution that it's difficult to obtain a table here at the last minute. Taking its name from a celebrated Viennese composer, Papa Haydn serves up an excellent selection of American comfort food in an elegant environment. The menu is diverse and offers a superb selection of meat and seafood entrees along with a good choice in sandwiches and salads. Try the Albacore Pasta, the carbo-lover's delight. Be sure to sample one of their famous desserts, like the berry tart. Enjoy a... read more

Yummy – Everything here was delicious. Unfortunately, there was a long wait, but that is only because everything is so good!
Service worth hurling up over – This place used to be a great place to eat dessert. The regular food menu is not worth the price. I used to endorse this place, but I can no longer. This is not a place where you can walk up and buy a whole cake, rather they like to send you down to the market down the road for a cake that's a couple days to a week old. The service the last time I went in recently was horrible!!!! I was ignored for much of the time. I've noticed the last two times I've been in the cake I was served was rather ... read more
Sad to not go back – I used to go to Papa haydn's regularly until I experienced bad service. Anyhow I visited the other location and found it to be a pleasant ambiance and the service was oh-so-much better. The dessert is to die for, that is the only reason I go here. I highly reccomend the dessert, but the other customers, and the staff, thumbs down.
Average – Although reservations aren't accepted, you can have a cocktail or glass of wine in Jo-Bar next door after you put your name on the list. Most people seem to come for the deserts, so waiting for a dinner table doesn't take long, and they'll come get you when there's an availability. I tried the Gnocchi with Shitake Mushrooms and balsamic vinegar. It was delicious. My date had the ravioli stuffed with potato and cheese, which I tasted and found not too impressive. It had artificial bacon flavor and you couldn't taste... read more
Exquisite Desserts / Crowded – The Portland faithful tend to be dedicated to this place as the posh, trendy place to be for the perfect after meal option. Good for dinner and for dates, this is the place to be.
Over hyped – The Papa Hayden dessert meme is done! I have tried several cakes and they were all very dry. I'm guessing the pastry chef doesn't know that cakes need simple syrup to moisten them up. The flavors were flat and the choclate tasted cheap to me. You'll have to try another restaurant if you're looking for good dessert.
Delicious! – I love going to Papa Haydn's for brunch as much as possible. The staff is very friendly, the atmosphere is nice, also quite interesting to observe the people outside. The best tasting brunch in all of Oregon. The desserts in the display case look fabulous, although I have not taken the opportunity to try any of their desserts (as of yet). I look forward to it in the near future.
Horrible rude staff ! – My husband and I stopped in for dessert to go. It was a horrible experience! The "chef" behind the counter was RUDE and he had the attitude that he was doing us a favor! They weren't busy at all, but it took about 20 minutes to slice a piece to cake and dump a cobbler from a icup into a to go container! When we arrived home the portion was small(cake) and he gave only a 1/2 scoop of ice cream! For 7.00+ a dessert they need to make it taste a lot better and not skimp! They should be happy to have our bu... read more
A very average restaurant – The sign in the window proudly proclaims that PH has served folks in Portland for more than 20 years. Sadly, this local landmark seems to be mostly resting on its laurels. A very unambitious menu not particularly well executed - though the customer service is quite good for this town. Cheap wine glasses, dry, overdone entres, uninspired wine list and cheap frozen french fries all take away from the wonderful ambiance and attentive service. Typical 23rd Ave eatery. Very little substance behind the ... read more
