Such is the popularity of this Northwest Portland institution that it's difficult to obtain a table here at the last minute. Taking its name from a celebrated Viennese composer, Papa Haydn serves up an excellent selection of American comfort food in an elegant environment. The menu is diverse and offers a superb selection of meat and seafood entrees along with a good choice in sandwiches and salads. Try the Albacore Pasta, the carbo-lover's delight. Be sure to sample one of their famous desserts, like the berry tart. Enjoy a... read more

Surprisingly dull desserts, but with good service – I have heard rave upon rave about the desserts here for several years. I have even made my own version of the Boccone Dolce, which is one of my favorite desserts. Sadly, the one here and the few other desserts we sampled were so overly sugared that no other tastes came thru. The wine (Merlot) and service were great, very nice and attentive staff.
Great Date Spot!! – This place has the best desserts I have ever experienced anywhere in Portland. (The only place that rivals is Via Delizia) I often take my date here after dinner for dessert and coffee. Excellent atmosphere. Best for smaller groups, because you may be embarassed if your group gets too loud. Presentation is amazing... everything looks so good it'll take you a good 15 min. to decide on what little peice of heaven you're going to consume. Make reservations... it will be a long wait if you don't.
bad food, beautiful space, yummy dessert – It is so sad when an old stand-by drops in to the land of restaurants gone bad. after repeated visits in the last few months hoping that eventually it would redeem itself, I have to say that this place has joined the ranks of restaurants coasting on a reputation built long ago. Desert is still lovely and delicious-- though of course with a list of desert options the length of a phone book, some are going to be better than others, like the amazing mexican chocolate cake!
A Portland institution on an upscale avenue offers a gallery of desserts that tastes as good as it looks. – In Short Portlanders drive across town for a slice of triple-chocolate cake or velvety banana-cream pie in this classic eatery with the recognizable striped awning. Special menu items range from ravioli with black pepper pasta to filet mignon with Italian spices to chicken breast marinated in apple brandy and mustard. The seafood, fresh pastas and grilled steaks and chops are reason enough to go, but the luscious cakes... read more
Holey smokes – That banana cream pie could tame the wildest animal. Never a more enjoyable dessert on earth.
What is the fuss? – I found the desserts very dry, the same as the review below. I have tried three things here and they where all average desserts. The dinner was average at best they said house ravioli and it was so obviously premade I was actually shocked. It is slighly amazing how busy this place is when there is a better cake at the new three lions bakery, better dessert at saint honore bakery and better meal at wildwood just down the street!
no need for dinner – Although dinner is great, the desserts are beyond! throw jenny craig out the window and just enjoy the delightfull, have to have a glass of milk with, desserts.
What a difference a year makes! – Wow. My partner and I recently returned to Papa Haydn after a year's absence. The food was great, apparently they have a new chef. Desserts, of course, were awesome (we always share the Boccone Dolce). Service was friendly and attentive. And the wine list... why don't these guys get more attention for having such an inventive, eclectic selection? Our dinner at Papa Haydn was THE BEST!
To die for!! – The desserts are to die for. You get a lot of great quality dessert for the money. I haven't tried the food but I would highly recommend the desserts. They have a long wait sometimes so be prepare to wait!
