Nostrana

4.5

About this business

Standing a little away from Portland's bustling city center, Nostrana serves up honest regional Italian fare in a warm and welcoming setting. The restaurant's outdoor facade is fairly simple. Step in, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what they've done with the place. Clean lines, lots of woods, ceiling mounted fans, large decorative plants and some great lighting choices give the place, a very charming feel. Choose from a limited, but well-crafted menu of regional Italian specialties made using the freshest local, seaso... read more

Never Again – My girlfriend and I went expecting something much more. They were out of most of the menu and what we got was horrible. It was not busy, only about three other tables and a couple at the bar. I had the flank steak, ordered medium rare, over under dressed arugula, the steak was cooked to death and cut with the grain. It was completely non-edible. My girlfriend ordered a pizza that the server with an attitude brought five minutes after my entree, which I sent back, and her pizza was not the one she ordered. We ha... read more

I'm sorry...I can't do that – Nostrana wants to be something. Its definitely high points in my book for food and ambience. Where it takes a nose dive however is service. In summary, the bartender argued with me about the drink I wanted to order because she didnt think I would like it and then it took two people over ten minutes to find menus for four of us. My wife, who ordered one of the tasty pizzas, has a sprained wrist which was in a cast. She clearly could not cut her pizza (they serve it in the traditional pie style an... read more

go at least a second time... – My wife and I notice a trend at Nostrana. There's usually a wait as people bustle about and file in for the grub. A sign of a good restaurant, and even better one considering just that, there is NO sign on the outside of Nostrana... imagine a 3 hour wait perhaps? The pizza is what we went there for first, because they're really cheap to share between two people and quite filling. There's a ton of assortment in entrees and an equal variety in price. I've enjoyed the flank steak, the pork ribs, a... read more

Good food, but the noise level is punishing – I am now, officially, fed up with the whole "industrial chic" fad. It is cold, uncomfortable, and always, punishingly LOUD. Nostrana, while offering some excellent food, is guilty of the above sin. It is also guilty of indifferent service. We were about to be seated when the hostess answered the phone, and began chatting with some potential customers, while we got to cool our heels. For a high-end restaurant, that was shocking. Table service was adequate. We had to wait a bit bet... read more

pizza with ambience – In our family's quest to try the best "new" pizza places in town we have now gone to Apizza Scholls a couple of times and then Nostrana (Ken's here we come). For about the same price as Apizza you get a nicer atmosphere, better service and great pizza. Not in the mood for pizza, no problem. My 5 year old was not in the mood for a thin crust, wood oven baked to perfection pizza, so she had the lentil bean soup. Well, now I'm torn, the soup was a good as the pizza. Maybe next time I'll go for their wood o... read more
