Nice ambience, poor service, so-so food – The food was OK, but not spectacular. The kobe beef was pretty good, the sushi was just OK. The service was pretty poor. It took FOREVER to get our drinks and order in (and it wasn't that busy -- our waitress was too busy gossiping with her coworkers), then when I asked if one roll was vegetarian, the waitress said yes, but it arrived w/ fish eggs in it. At least she was nice about having it remade. The music is so damn loud it's near impossible to have a conversation. I'd recommend ... read more

More than 120 varieties of whiskey and Japanese small plates lure in the uber-stylish set. – The Scene Faux cobblestone floors, beige brick walls, illuminated panels and rich woods make for a highly texturized atmosphere, while high ceilings and exposed beams lend an industrial vibe. In the lounge, well-dressed 20-somethings sprawl out on cushy, pillow-filled banquettes and mod chairs that surround low tables. A loft-like upstairs dining room overlooks the bar below, which is lined with hundreds of back-lit bottles. The Food... read more

Superb Food, service & atmosphere – nihon seems to work on doing what no other japanese resturant has done in the city in creativity and presentation. Dishes we loved were the hamachi stuffed shitake', the japanese wings that were unusually juicy & good, but you must be willing to use your hands to realy enjoy. I tried sushi like the 1974 roll which was extremly refreshing and tasty. what topped it all was the Toro which I never had before this good. Service was very genuine and friendly. they came across as very welcoming. ... read more

Botched up reservations – I have to admit that I was really looking forward to trying this place out. The reservation for 22 was confirmed with Nihon until they called back a day later and told me that somebody had made a mistake and that they were already booked. That being said I think the service/managment could stand to be a little better. Sorry to say that I can't rate the lounge, food, ambience or value.

The model of what an SF restaurant should be – Superb food, friendly hip service, great interior design, a few decent wines. EXCELLENT dishes: uni on the spoon, toro tartare with avocado, shitake stuffed with hamachi, scallop sashimi. Good dishes: fried chicken wings, kumamotos with various roes. Average dishes: kobe tataki, octopus. I also enjoy its sister restaurant Tsunami on Divisadero, but Nihon focuses on innovative fresh fish dishes with lots of embellishments as opposed to plain sushi. I can't wait to go back; next t... read more

Sexiest Bar Yet – waoo... I could not belive how nice it is. Although it is on island by itself, I think that could be part of the charm. the design is remarkable with lots of attention to detail. We went for drinks, did not try the food so I cant testify to that. However, the bar is fin with incredibly large selection of whiskies & they pour them stiff... their drinks are great especially that apple mack or esquire as my gf said. DJ music was good and over all Im sure to be back.

Lovely Place for a Thursday Night – I went there tonight with my boyfriend and we had a fun night. We didn't make any reservation, but the receptionist tried hard to give us a table. I recognised the bartender was actually from Betelnut on Fillmore......He is a great bartender with a nice twist of knowing what he is doing. Great food here, too. We love the fusion idea of all their resturants. We will try Tsunami next time!!!

A New Hit – I know these guys.. I love their other places & I was happy to know that they opened a new Japanese place. I went there early week... it was not so busy but busy enough for my taste. The food ahh what can I say.. I love Adcahi ... he is gooood... like the review before me ..I agree the more whiskey you drink..the more you love it.. it simplygets better... Design is unlike any other place in the city.. Music was fun & service friendly & efficent. I have to grow to like whiskey enough to get my bottle there, which ... read more

whiskey whiskey & more whiskey – I cant belive I did not think of this idea before... A whiskey bar in the city... I loved it. The food was superb. You have to try their Japanese wings yummy... The coke kobe melted in our mouths & I cant belive how big the thunder bird role was. Our whiskey surprisingly complimented our food to a degree I did not think it would... Service was extremly friendly although they seemed running around all the time.. they are simply good & do make an effort. Ohhh Im sorry nihon we stayed too long o... read more
