Still The Best! – Just came from Ms. T's RBL and ? no doubt ? still the best in the city! Chicken here is still my favorite. Small plate make sharing fun. And the parties they throw here are off the hook. Can't wait until next Party of the Year Nov. 3.
Best Soul Food in the City! – 4.26.07.I was visiting Ms. Tootsies Soul Food Cafe last week for Penn Relays. I am so glad I found this spot. The name says it all. A cozy cafe with the best soul food in the city. I had the sweet tea I heard about, and was instantly taken back to the lazy days of my childhood. Our table had such a variety of entrees, it is hard to pick my favorite. Fried Chicken and Catfish with; Cheesy Mac, Buttery Yams, Peppery Cabbage and cornbread! I wanted to curl up in the booth after a thick slice of Swe... read more
Not recommended, if you've tasted great soul food, you'll be disappointed – My husband and I live in Kansas City, MO and were in Philadelphia for vacation. We are always looking for a great soulfood restaurant and found Ms. Tootsie's and after seeing all the great reviews decided to try it. Boy were we disappointed! Maybe the other reviewers have not had good soul food because if they did they would know that Ms. Tootsie's is NOT it! First, it is in a back alley, the restaurant is about the size of a living room, so you're g... read more
Very warm atmosphere....I'm hooked!!! – Having moved to the city a few weeks ago one the first things that I did was seek out some authentic down south cooking to remind me of home and ease my transition from rural Georigia to Philly. Well I found it! At Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Cafe on South Street. The ambience of the restaurant was very welcoming and my server Dominique went well out of her way to explain the menu, keep my glass of Southern style sweet tea brimming, and ensure that I had an all around enjoyable experience.... read more
Great Soul Food – This is a great restaurant if you are trying to impress your mate, friends, or family members. My friend and I drove from Maryland on two different occassion just to eat at Ms. Tootsie's. It is hard to find a good soul food restaurant in Baltimore, Maryland. The hour wait was okay with us because it was a nice summer night. Once we were seated the service was fast and great. I love the dim lights and hardwood floods as well as the color paintings. The ice tea is off the hook and the Mac and cheese and green... read more
The sides are the best! – Ms. Tootsie's has the best sides around. They have great mac and cheese, collard greens, black eyed peas, and the string beans are by far the tastiest I've ever eaten. The candied yams are to die for as well. The meals start with great cornbread muffins and they serve wicked tea here. The entrees get mixed reviews, though. The fried chicken seemed a bit meager in size and suffered from being in the fryer much too long. The bbq'd ribs were much better, but also seemed a tad dry. The sauce served with... read more
Oh My God You Gotta Get There Soon!!!!!! 4/10/07 – Ms. Tootsie's Soul Food Restaurant recently opened their dining facility in the New RBL. The experience was off the chain. I started out with the Spicy Jumbo Crab Cakes for appetizers which were scrumptous. My dining partner enjoyed the Grilled Shrimp & Collard Greens. My entree was Smothered Turkey Chops along with the African Rice and Black Eyed Peas. Nothing can describe this meal. My dining partner the Chicken & Waffles. (Roscoe's better watch out). Of course you have al... read more
Avoid Saturday night!! – the saturday night wait was horrendous. you have to wait outside and on a cold night, that's not cool. 1hr to be seated and then 45 minutes to be served our entrees. when my entree arrived i was told it would take an extra 20mins for my green beans. i opted for the cabbage because i was famished by this time. considering the wait, the food was OK. cornbread, sweet tea, fried chicken wings, yams were GREAT!! i didn't like my mac & cheese though. the cheese was more velveeta than hard cheddar. i was ex... read more
