For the biases at Monticello, go to, like, and comment at Bring Back Jefferson to Monticello. It's a Facebook page. It's now the Sally Hemings story. TJ is lost. I am told that soon they're prohibiting tours w/i Monticello.
I’ve been coming to Monticello since I was young. They’ve grown so much and revealed so much about the community that lived at Monticello. They no longer avoid talking about the enslaved people and their stories. The tours are amazing and it’s a great spot to reflect upon the complexity of Jefferson.
We purchased the Hemmings tour. It is limited to around 14 participants and included an hour of debriefing afterwards. An included tour was "Slavery at Monticello". Our guide (David) was articulate, incredibly well versed and interesting. It is good to see Monticello including the darker side of Jefferson along with the admirable qualities we all heard in school.
I love history so this is a great way to experience it .
This is my 5th time visiting Monticello and the first visit where I have left completely underwhelmed. We were rushed through and received about a minute and a half explanation of each room. The previous tours went into detail about Jefferson’s life and accomplishments, daily life on the plantation, the artifacts that are in the house etc. Today’s tour was purely a money making venture. We paid $71 for my family to tour the house and feel the tour was worth half that.
What an amazing experience to walk back through history~!. My husband and I took a vacation down to VA. to visit four Presidential homes. Although the day was rainy, the tour guide was excited about his subject and knowledgeable. The museum also had a tour guide for Mulberry Row, where the slaves lived, worked and died. The family history was also explored. We've had much to reflect about. Also, the APP called Slavery at Monticello was excellent and even though now home, we've been reading and listening to the many stories. ... read more
My husband and I visited Monticello today for the 1st time. We had a beautiful visit! Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Perry gathered us up and started giving us information on the grounds. Our tour guide was Charlie. Both men did a fantastic job! Charlie was informative, friendly and funny. The grounds were in full bloom and lovely. The 15 minute movie, which is included with the day pass was great! We had a quiet lunch on the back deck and got a visit from a raven. Thank you for making our first impression of Montic... read more
The old gentleman (probably in his 70s) that was our guide clearly had something against Jefferson. He couldn’t stay off of the negative aspects of Jefferson and the era. I can’t imagine how he’d be if he were a tour guide of Lincoln’s homestead. He would probably not be able to get off the fact that Mary Todd Lincoln kept her slaves for the longest of any other documented citizen after all were to be freed. The tour guide should have just kept his old opinionated self at home! I was so thankful to have known my history. I r... read more
Took the tour on May 11th. Really enjoyed it... Enjoyed the tour guide, although more info on the house, a little less on the slavery would have been a better balance...We get it, Jefferson owned salves, slavery is bad...We were there to hear about house.
