Terrible, terrible food. – I am not one to take time to write restuarant reviews, but the food at Maverick was so terrible I just have to vent. I paid $25 for a steak that looked like it came from Sizzler: grey, fatty, thin, and unappetizing. Only 25% of the steak was edible, the rest was pure fat...plus the vegetables were overcooked. I sampled my friends entrees and found them to be lacking too. Warning: the fish dishes all come with the skin left on. This is a place for burly, manly diners who like food that looks like it... read more
Wonderful Experience – I loved my experience at Maverick. The server was very polite and informative and every aspect of the service was fabulous. The menu was small, but was not a problem because everything looked amazing, and everything my table ordered was delicioius. The decor is great, very warm and inviting. The bussers were great and my table was always taken care of. Maverick has been one of the best experience I have had in the city and the Bay Area, and I will be returning frequently.
Seasonal food in the old Limon space – When the menu has 12 things on it and you want to order all 12 you know it's going to be a good night. The food was wonderful. Fuji persimmon salad with pomegranate was a nice way to start off the fall season. Roasted beet salad was awesome. The duck over mushrooms was overly salty but still a treat. It's in the old Limon space and still shares the same problem in that it's LOUD. A few acoustic tiles in the ceiling would go a long way to making it more conversation friendly. All in all,... read more
Maver-ICK – In a nutshell...service was bad and food was worse. Inexperieced management and wait staff. Menu highlighted pork as Berkshire but it was tough, gristly, and devoid of flavor, everything Berkshire is not supposed to be (unfortunately the management wished to argue about that). Lettuce in salad was old and wilted. The Maytag bleu cheese topping tasted like Marie's store-bought dressing. We thought it would have been nice if they served our crab puff appetizer before the main course, but then they were a disappoint... read more
Just ok – You know, it was alright. Not bad, but really nothing special either. I definitely wouldn't bother to go back and probably wouldn't send friends. Cute location, liked the ambiance though it was a little loud. The steak and fries were tasty...but who's not searving this dish these days? The duck was ok. The service was rather brusque, but was attentive. The chocolate crème brulee was pretty good, but when they crisped the top it burns the chocolate, which tastes like burnt chocolate. I really wanted to love Maverick... read more
Mission hip, but with some soul – The Mission isn't short of restaurants that serve tasty, homestyle American fare, but what separates Maverick is the care and attention that are lavished on both the food and the clientele. We went during the restaurant's second week, so reservations were easy to get and service was impeccable. We predicted at the time that it would become very popular, very quickly, so cannot comment on how it's success may have changed the food, service or ambiance.
User review by souperbee – I've been to Maverick 3 times and I've loved all of my dining experiences! Their food is the most fantastic! I really love the duck leg--crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. The cabbage and apples on the side of the duck added a touch of acidity to compliment an otherwise very rich dish. My other favorites include the quail, the crab fluffs, the apple and celery soup, and the mac and cheese is to die for! The Maverick wine guy is also friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely took th... read more
User review by jumultini – Terrible wait staff. Our waiter actually told us that was our fault that our order was delayed because we didn't order the entree with the appertizers. Awfull!!!
Hot Spot – After trying Maverick (and then returning, and returning again), I have to say that I'm very impressed by this new Mission eatery. The food is excellent and reasonably priced, and the creative twist on the Americana theme as well as the attention to detail give the dishes a lot of interest and appeal. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive, and the wine service and selection are outstanding. The ambience tops off the experience--the decor is hip and the restaurant has a warm, jovial energy that makes you want to... read more
