atmospheric – I stayed in 2001. Room had appealing minimalist design, excellent use of space, comfortable bed, fresh flowers. Instead of a closet, there was an unenclosed rack, and instead of a chest, there was a super-long shelf. Nice complimentary breakfast with newspapers. From my "quiet" room, I had to walk some distance in the rain and down steps to get to my car--sort of awkward with luggage and an umbrella. Simply Outstanding – This was my first time at the hotel. Arrived early, but my room wasn't ready, Nicki quickly offered to check my luggage, offered advice on near-by restaurants and related information. The staff went out of there way to make me and my guest feel as if we were family (rather VIP'S). The rooms were simple, elegant, and confortable. Young, fun, good location – We usually stay next door at the Austin Motel, a much more accurate reflection of the "true Austin." However, if the Austin Motel is full and you've got some extra cash, try the Hotel San Jose. It does try too hard to be hip, but it also does a lot of things well: the rooms are spare yet comfy, the courtyard is both beautiful and fun (due to the bar and fire pit), and the coffee shop next door brings in local bands for special events, which is fun.
