History Established in 2000. A hotel for friends from near and far in Austin, Texas. Built in 1936 as an "ultramodern" motor court, the property has been transformed into a 40 room urban bungalow-style hotel tucked behind stucco walls and set amidst lush garden courtyards. The San Jose is located on South Congress Avenue, a few blocks from downtown and Lady Bird Johnson Lake in the heart of one of Austin's favorite neighborhoods. In addition to being a unique place to sleep, the Hotel San Jose serves as a gathering place and... read more

A funky South Congress hotel that attracts musicians and savvy tourists with its authentic Austin style. – In Short When the San Jose Hotel was built in 1936, the look was described as "ultramodern." Today, it's every bit as cool and colorful as the guests who check in. Musicians are the norm, as are visitors who want the true Austin experience. The 40 rooms and suites are stylish and comfortable. Gravel pathways and a courtyard complete the scene. Other amenities include a small pool, high-speed Internet access, on-call mas... read more
Avoid for Wedding Night or other Special Occasions – Brides beware: My husband and I chose the San Jose Hotel for our wedding night. We booked a courtyard suite for two nights (a $600+value). Including out of town guests for our wedding, we occupied 7 rooms valued over $3000. We were treated like anything but valued customers. The management was rude and hard to work with. They made having bridal portraits in their courtyard unbearable. We had to comply with their strict guidelines of where we could go, how much time to take... read more
Once in a Blue Moon... – I am an Austinite who has been intrigued by the San Jose for some time now. Love the outside decor but we stayed on a drizzly evening. This resulted in a less than enjoyable experience with the wet gravel from the walkways being tracked onto our room's concrete floor. The interiors are quite sparse but it was interesting to note just how little you need to be comfortable. I would recommend spending the $$$ if you are planning to walk or bike everywhere and can truly enjoy the conversation areas outsi... read more
Boutique, but not overly fancy – Great place to stay if you don't like the corporate places that are so common these days. This place has cool decor and architecture. Lots of celebs stay here. Easy to walk to local attractions.
Someone should tell the owner... – ...that she's in the HOSPITALITY business. Popped in to ask about blocking a few rooms for my wedding and the owner was shockingly rude. Apparently she's under the impression that whatever trendy cache they currently enjoy will keep them afloat forever.
Lost my way – Good, interesting, hip visual design, but noisy and expensive. The bathroom doors are sliding garage door types that are very noisy in the middle of the night and not very private. You can hear EVERYTHING! Nice area unless you're tired of smug, self-consciously hip, trendy condescending people.
Wouldn't Stay Anywhere Else – This hotel has so much character & I love its artistic "community" feel. Very zen. The bedding is the most comfortable I've ever slept in...loved it so much I purchased the very same bedding/bath supplies (m.o.p. shampoos & Dr. Bonners peppermint soap) and have created my own San Jose Hotel guest room in my home...all the way down to the guest miniatures and the stainless steel hangers!! The video/CD library are a huge +. The proximity to the parks/downtown is ideal. Great shopping along S. Cong... read more
Hotel San Jose – San Jose: one of the absolute worst experiences ever. Fairly expensive (we paid $185/night) so it's reasonable to expect upgraded amenities. There are very few (decent location; video/CD library). The Hotel "hosts" a poolside party on weekends 'til around midnight (they don't tell you this when you reserve). The noise made it impossible to sleep in our poolside room. Noisy, naked guests in the pool @ 2 a.m. also brought NO response from the staff. Hotel mgmt never even responded to a letter we sent. Friendly & funky, but too noisy – Front desk very helpful in making restaurant recommendations, etc. Decor is interesting but a bit sparse, even for a fan of minimalism. Nice soap and high-end bath fixtures. Guest chair and phone were dirty, otherwise room was clean and smelled good. Surroundings are very attractive. Can't recommend because of paper-thin walls; even mundane noises from quiet guests were loud enough to wake us up. (If you get a band next door, you're done for.)
