Not the best way of #seeingit Asking people to blind fold themselves without an expert is unacceptable!

While the objective of this campaign seems to be well intentioned, the execution is deplorable. All it will do is grow the stigma of blindness whilst weakening the perception that a blind person is just as capable as a sighted person. Please FFB, think about what you're doing and the repercussions of your actions to the blind community before it's too late and the damage is done.

The #HowEyeSeeIt blindfold challenge is incredibly insulting to Blind people. It promotes fear and pity for the blind, and perpetuates negative stereotypes. I am not at all opposed to important research about blindness, but instilling fear and pity in people is not the way to go about promoting the cause. I am thoroughly disappointed in the FFB for continuing to release #HowEyeSeeIt videos, instead of listening to the voices of many blind people who have expressed concern over this campaign.

I am all about raising money for medical research to cure blindness, however, I feel that this is a disrespectful way to go about it. FFB is disrespecting all the blind people who have worked so hard to overcome our disability through proper training and skills, so that blindness is not the characteristic that defines us.

While I am all about funding projects to fight blindness, FFB made a grievous mistake when it launched the #HowEyeSeeIt campaign, which perpetuates fears about blindness. As a blind person fighting for equal access to the world, this campaign sets us back tremendously in our progress. I hope the FFB can focus on cures and less on perpetuating fear.

HowEyeSeeIt is not a helpful way to raise awareness or money to help the blind. It makes no sense to act like those who are blind are poor, helpless souls who have been cursed with blindness. By blindfolding sighted people who do not have the experience and skills needed to navigate the world as a blind person does, you're sending the wrong message and playing on people's fear of blindness. I have friends who are blind and they are very happy, capable, productive, successful, and independent people.

My husband is blind and he is able to do anything he wants. He has a masters degree. He works for Tennessee department of Transportation. He goes to work downtown and uses his white cane or guide dog. Putting blind folds on people for a short period of time and sending them to do task when they have not been trained without vision is absurd. I'm not sure why you are not using blind people as they can show you they can do anything a sighted person can do. All blind people can live the lives they want. It is respectable to be ... read more
