I have RP and support retinal research; however, I cannot give FF B a positive rating. The #HowEyeSeeIt campaign is offensive, inaccurate, and harmful. FFB, we all make mistakes, suspend #HowEyeSeeIt immediately!
If I were trying to raise money for a cause, and the people who the cause is meant to help told me my methods for raising money were negative and offensive, I would immediately pull the plug. This organization has done the opposite. It really makes me question the integrity of the people running this organization.
This organization misrepresents blindness as something that is tragic, life ending, and something that imprisons a person in darkness. In their recent campaign, they simulate blindness with blindfolds. Unfortunately, there is no discussion of the non-visual skills and accommodations that allow blind people to live normal and productive lives. With the proper training, blind people can become empowered and independent and truly live the lives they want. Shame on FFB for portraying blindness in such a pathetic way!
It's sad that a "Foundation" is trying to raise money for scientific research in a manner which research has shown is not only inaccurate but is harmful. Check out the existing research #FightingBlindness ( I cannot post the URL, but check out: "The Perils of Playing Blind: Problems with Blindness Simulation and a Better Way to Teach about Blindness," by Dr. Arielle Silverman)
The core values of an organization come through in its communications. It is clear that this organization is willing to play on the false conditioned fears of blindness in order to promote medical research. This is irresponsible, demonstrates values that are against the interest of our society, and which fail to promote a healthy place for donors to invest. Until the core values of the organization are strengthened, I certainly can not support their objectives.
Any organization working to "help" individuals with a particular issue (in this case blindness), should listen to those individuals when they explain how certain activities are more harmful than helpful in how they affect the general public's attitude towards blindness.
This is absolutely appalling!! We are normal people living our lives. This must be stopped!!!!
The cause here: researching blindness and trying to find a cure is a worthy one, however this organization goes about its goals in an offensive, ableist manner. Looking through the posts on the Facebook tells me this is a long term problem, not just this one campaign, that the organization itself is institutionally ableist in a manner reminiscent of Autism Speaks. People interested in donating money for blindness research and treatments should look for one that doesn't look down on the people it's trying to help.
It would be a good organization if they actually respected blind people. Time and time again they've demeaned blind people as in capable. Newsflash, you can support research and acknowledge that disability doesn't mean not living a full, independent, and capable life.
