Editorial fromThe famous El Cholo, boasting L.A.'s most legendary margaritas, has finally arrived in Pasadena and has been overwhelmed by patrons since the day it opened (hour waits are not uncommon). The restaurant offers a predictable Mexican decor,…

Their Guacamole is awesome!
Poor Service Revising my review - when I came back for a second visit, the food was mediocre (too greasy) and the service was very slow. On top of all this, they don't take the Pasadena.com card anymore. Thumbs down.
So much promise.... I thought I'd found it at last, the perfect Mexican restaurant. It had style, and I was hoping content and service. But other than the decor, El Cholo was a severe disappointment. The order was taken quite late, and the food, was, a definite so-so, at least compared to the Western location. I had beef fajitas, and the beef was an insult to my tastebuds - it was drowning in oil as well as completely tasteless and chewy/sinewy. I have been here several times and each time I enjoy it more and more. At first I thought the food was overrated, but now I'm beginning to experience the nice flavors of each dish. They do have good homemade chips and they tend to be nice and salty.Try the chimichangas and/or the green chili enchiladas suizas. A nice peach or strawberry margarita always goes nice with a good meal. Skip on dessert, not that great here. Enjoy the warm tortillas, I don't think they're fresh, but still good.
I was not impressed by the food or the service. From my estimation, this will probably be more of a fad restaurant in the Pasadena area. The original in LA is great, but I was very disappointed with my visit to the Pasadena location. It is currently on of the hip places to go, but there are much better places to go for basic or more upscale Mexican in Pasadena that have nicer atmospheres and cuisine.
Extremely popular hang-out - would suggest reservations. The service is good, on average. They seem to care. Prices are a little on the high side but the food is great!
