El Chile Cafe y Cantina is a chic, yet unpretentious hangout. The walls and the artwork displayed around the restaurant is tasteful. What's equally tasty is the tortilla chips with avocado, salsa and fish. They do have the usual fare of tacos and enchiladas. If you're game, also attempt the pear margarita or the tejas tea. The Happy Hour is only on weekdays but you wouldn't know the difference. El Chile Cafe y Cantina is all about having fun, is a vibrant place and is unlike most other eateries that are Tex-Mex.

Excellent drinks and food, terrible service – I am a waitress in Austin and generally try to understand where the staff is coming from. I have never walked out on a restaraunt, until El Chile.. I usually go during the day when it's not busy, the service is still slow and generally rude but I try to get past that because the Chilango (orange) Margarita and the Michelada's are worth it, I happen to love the smoky chipotle salsa as well. One night I was in a group of 5 adults and 2 children and we were seated by the host and th... read more
Mediocre food, rude wait staff, long waits, good Micheladas and Chili Margs – I have been to El Chile numerous times over the past couple of years. With each subsequent visit, both the quality of food and service has deteriorated. On our last visit, the waiter made his first stop at our table after we were seated for more than 15 minutes and then proceeded to be very rude. This attitude lasted the rest of the meal. In terms of the food, I ordered the Enchiladas Verde. It was extremely bland. Further, while some make like the... read more
Should Be Called: The Chili Bar & Grill – I guess if they called it The Chili Bar & Grill, it wouldn't be as cool sounding. No, it isn't a hole in the wall, and no, it isn't Mexican food. It is interesting though, and it is its own thing. I've been there twice and gotten two different meals, one being the chicken poblano and the second was the fajitas. I've tried the margharitas and the tres leches cake. Although I liked the entrees, everything else was really sub-par. Don't get me wrong, I like this place and I am trying to... read more
great quasi mexican seafood dishes – this place is great if you are looking for something mexicanish for a weekend lunch. i love going here with my boyfriend and maybe some friends for lunch- too crowded for dinner since its such a small place. the huge michiladas (spicy beer/citrus cocktail) are brilliant. go with something with guacamole and seafood. don't stick to plain enchiladas.
A specific niche venue – I don't know...what do you want when you go out for Mexican? If it's authentic stuff, regular people, not too loud, and inexpensive, then I'd say El Chile is not for you. If you're looking for a cool-looking place with a fairly white-bread, hipster clientele that's probably a subset of Jeffrey's, and some nice, slightly overpriced, well-executed dishes, it could be just your cup of tea. Gets loud as hell inside; recommend outdoor seating if it's not too hot. Here's the best way I can sum it up: if yo... read more
Best combination of interior Mexican food and Tex-Mex in Austin – El Chile is simply a wonderful little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant -- relaxed and inexpensive with top-notch cuisine. Very casual dress -- classic Austin style with plenty of college students hanging-out. The first part of the meal that catches your attention is the black Salsa a la Charra that comes with the chips -- savory salsa that won't scare-away folks who can't handle heat. For an appetizer, get the Rajas con Queso for a delectable combination of... read more
Great food, great value – After hearing so much about this place I finally had to give it a try. Most places dont live up to the hype that surrounds them. El Chile, on the other hand, delivers the goods. The salsa has lots of flavor without to much heat. The mole is probably the best in Austin, spicy, with nutty and chocolate flavors. The Mexican Martini was a perfect blend of lime juice, tequila, and triple sec. The deck looked nice but there was a wait so we opted for indoor seating. Although it was a bit noisy the A/C and... read more
Great drinks and fantasic food! – This place blew me away. The drinks were great (Chilango, Chilitini, and house rocks), the atmosphere was cool (great patio, nice colors, soft lighting, and busy), and the music was good. Most places can get by on the aesthetics and drinks but El Chile goes way above and beyond when it comes to the food. I couldnt stop eating the salsa (I ended up buying 2 jars to go). The shrimp nachos were simple (marinated shrimp, cheese, and jalapeno) but bursting with flavor. For my entree I opted for t... read more
Just OK – First, the margaritas were bad (cheap tequila). The food was just OK. If you want good Mexican/Tex-Mex/Latin food this is not the place to go. The prices were a little steep for the the food quality (Enchiladas Verdes). The atmosphere is a positive.
