Founded in 1963 by Portland culinary icon Horst Mager, der Rheinlander offered a unique experience with strolling accordion players and singing waitresses. Almost 50 years later owner Suzeanne Mager, Horst’s daughter, carries the authentic old-world feel with traditionally dressed, singing staff serving scratch-made recipes and extensive German beer and wine selections.

I have had the pleasure of working there on and on over the past 30 years. It has been my family's favorite place to go to for all special birthdays and such. I love to get the chance to sing again too when we go! We are very sad to see it go, but we will always have our memories
BEST place we've EVER been! Why do you HAVE to close?! We JUST found you!
We visited with a group of 18 people. The service, entertainment and food was excellent!!! We all wanted to visit it one more time before it closes. We are sad to see this tradition come to an end!!
We have been going to Der Rheinlander for over 50 years & will miss it when it closes.
We had a wonderful dinner and fun music! Our waiter even sang for us! The prices were fair. Hate to see such an iconic Portland landmark restaurant close! Glad we went one last time!
Great food and friendly, entertaining staff. Brought back memories.
