About this business

Founded in 1963 by Portland culinary icon Horst Mager, der Rheinlander offered a unique experience with strolling accordion players and singing waitresses. Almost 50 years later owner Suzeanne Mager, Horst’s daughter, carries the authentic old-world feel with traditionally dressed, singing staff serving scratch-made recipes and extensive German beer and wine selections.

Hurry and make memories at yet another Portland establishment closing. Hunter room is very festive, the whole building is like eating in fairytale land at Disneyland.

Tonight my husband and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary. The food was awesome! The staff was friendly and we enjoyed listening to the live music while we ate! We haven't had a chance to have our dessert but I'm sure it will be awesome too! Thank you for a great night!!!

So sorry to see this restaurant closing. We were told their last day will be the end of the year. We've been here many times over the years. Last night we had the Swiss fondue (yum!) and I had the weiner schnitzel (?) which is one of my favorites. The singing is always so much fun. Overall we had a very pleasant evening. We'll be back for Thanksgiving and one more time in December. We are sure going to miss der Rheinlander!

Had to visit this place one last time after hearing the absolutely dreadful news that they will be closing at the end of the year. How I really wish someone would be able to step in and save this place from going away. Crowdfunding, etc. That said, I had a most enjoyable meal- Jäeger Chicken Schnitzel, which was presented and tasted exquisite. Add in the ambience and the accordion playing softly behind us-this is truly a masterpiece of Portland dining that I will be very very sad to see it go. I would have done nearly anythi... read more
