About this business

Founded in 1963 by Portland culinary icon Horst Mager, der Rheinlander offered a unique experience with strolling accordion players and singing waitresses. Almost 50 years later owner Suzeanne Mager, Horst’s daughter, carries the authentic old-world feel with traditionally dressed, singing staff serving scratch-made recipes and extensive German beer and wine selections.

So sad these guys are closing, my whole family was in for a birthday last night. As usual everything was great and we will be missing having family gatherings and singing, slamming steins on the tables, clapping, stuffing our faces and whooping and hollering all night.

Family tradition for as long as I remember. Grandparents' anniversaries, holiday reunions, birthdays. Wonderful memories at Der Rheinlander!

This is one of my favorite places in Portland - my whole life, especially when my German grandmother was alive, this was the spot for big family meals. The food is always delicious - this trip included an amazing Wild Boar sausage. Our waiter was wonderful and let us "help" sing our favorite songs. I am so sad that the restaurant is closing but I'm glad we got to visit one more time. Der Abschied

This place has held countless memories for all of us over the year! A wonderful atmosphere, signing and costumes, with grandmas cooking. I can't even begin to express how much I love this place and will miss it! A true Cult classic! Thanks for being the best Portland has to offer!!!!
