Country Cat Dinner House & Bar

About this business

One of the most popular restaurants in the city, The Country Cat Dinner House & Bar is perpetually buzzing with energy. There is something immensely likable about this eatery, starting from the strange mosaic cat that greets you at the door, right down to the fantastic home-style food. The daily brunch is one of the drawing cards, and it is quite easy to see why; who would turn down offerings like Lemon Ricotta Pancakes, smoked Steelhead Eggs Benedict and vegetarian white bean chili? Offerings like Red wine braised beef and ... read more

Country Cat has best duck, pork, appetisers and desserts – We recently went to the Country Cat Restaurant and "were blown away" by the warm atmosphere and truly fabulous food. From LA we did not know what to expect, but found this cute place near the airport and decided to give it a try. The variety was such a pleasant surprise, the staff was warm and professional. We were in Portland for a week on business and were so impressed with the quality of food, that we ate there twice. The duck and port are to die for and the appet... read more

A true success in bringing the finest in Midwest and Southern cuisine to the Pacific Northwest – Having enjoyed numerous enjoyable meals at the Country Cat, my wife and I have recommended it highly to friends and relatives and have received glowing reviews from each and every one of them. The quality and vitality of the servers complement the expertise and high quality of the kitchen ... southern fried chicken... collard greens... midwest smoked duck... old time hamburger with melt in your mouth onion rings.. rhubarb cobbler... read more

Always WONDERFUL !! – In reading some of the recent comments about my all-time favorite restaurant, THE COUNTRY CAT, it is very hard for me to relate to their criticisms. I travel half-way across the country just to eat there and have never had one bad meal or server. The wine recommendations are always perfect, the food consistently perfectly cooked, served and presented and the staff, the obviously happy but very dedicated, hard-working staff, has always put me and my companions at ease and we leave feeling totally happy. ... read more

Higher Expectations – We also saw the Sunset article and drove down the next day to enjoy the Sunday brunch. I loved the decor but also felt really cold inside and we weren't seated by the windows. One of my pet peeves is when you order scrambled eggs and they don't come back fluffy. My eggs were presented in a solid piece like at McDonald's. One wet slab of eggs. The potatoes were cold and heavily coated in herbs. Our breakfast was also on the expensive side, about $40 for two. I don't mind paying for a good breakfast but I... read more

WAY expensive and not good for kids... – I took my son and husband to Country Cat after seeing a write up in Sunset Magazine. The restaurant looked great from the outside but on a rainy Portland day, we found the inside cold and dark [I saw the thermostat - 66? degrees AND sitting next to large windows]. We ordered an appetizer and a kids plate to get started - both were great, although a bit overpriced for the portion size [$9 app. w/ 3 pieces] and my son's chicken was way too hot to give a 16month old right away. We notice... read more

Comfort with class! – My family and I were in the Country Cat the other night and just loved it. The food was great. The service unpretentious and we were so comfortable. We have been there a number of times and for brunch and have always left satisfied. The chef comes out and has talked to us and always checks to make sure we are satisfied and happy. It's great that it's walking distance from our house.

Sorry folks – I?ve eaten at the Country Cat several times, knowing I would probably be disappointed again. I usually only give a place 2 chances if they don?t deliver the first time but it?s walking distance from my home and I like supporting neighborhood joints. The salads are usually good and the onion rings are really good. If I could just resist ordering, and overpaying for, an overly sauced overly complicated entree while ignoring the really uncomfortable seats (the noise and the overcrowded atmosphere are a product of ... read more

Montavilla Gem – Yeah! Finally a nice, funky place to hang out in this neighborhood. We've had brunch and numerous cocktails at the Cat. The staff is always friendly. We were having a hard time coming up with a shot that we wanted to do the last time we went in....one of the gals suggested a : Woo Woo! So good! I love that families are there....seems that people act put out when children are out to eat with their parents. Obviously if a child is acting up...the parent needs to deal with that but, the overall 'noise' that a r... read more

Terrific food, but we were not treated well – We had Sunday Brunch yesterday (2/24). The food was really delicious. However, the restaurant was really noisy. What is worse is that an audio speaker was mounted on the wall above our table, and the music consisted of this terribly irritating, incessant bass drumming. My entire family found the music, in combination with the noise, to be torture. We asked a waitress nicely if she would not mind turning down the music. With the first request, no response. 2nd request, five minute... read more
