Coal Vines Pizza

4.3

About this business

Coal Vines is a fantastic restaurant/wine bar in the heart of Uptown. With its coal-burning oven, this is probably the closest you will come to authentic New York pizza. The menu includes such delectable items as Pizzas, Spiced Salmon Salad, Salad Pies, which are served cold and by the slice, Eggplant Milanese Sandwich, Veal & Pepper Rolls, and amazing deserts like Tiramisu Float. Wine is available by the glass or bottle. The décor is upscale and it's easy to forget that everything on the menu is cheap.

Absolutely pathetic – If time is money, then this is one of the most expensive restaurants in Dallas. If you're lucky enough to be seated within 30 minutes, prepare yourself for the absolute joy of waiting another hour and a half for a pizza. In my case, however, this Herculean test of patience yielded no reward. When the pizza finally arrived, it was anchovy...although I did order pepperoni and mushroom, to be fair. Coal Vines miraculously turns the simplest of culinary fare into an infuriating ordeal. Don't waste your time... read more

Trying to grab a seat may ruin your appetite! – It was hard for me to rate this pizza joint a mere 5 out of 10, but I could not get over how horrible the seating experience was. The problem is not the food, believe me, and it's not the servers, it's the way that you are treated when your are trying to grab a seat. When you think of pizza you think of a good time, but the seating situation can ruin your evening in a matter of seconds. All you want is a seat and you get attitude and disgust back. Other than that the food was g... read more

Good food, Great Ambience, Sucky Sucky Service – First of all, it's not "New York style." The crust isn't puffy enough at the outer rim, it's pretty thin all the way across. It's really European Style. It's what you would get in Europe with the exception that they don't call it Pizza Margherita. It's still good. Secondly, if it's busy, don't expect to see the waiter but once an hour. You'd think that they would want to move tables, but they don't give a damn. For as small as it is, it has nowhere near enough wait staff. I've... read more

Just like NYC – Ok I totally disagree with the prior review. We ate there Sunday night and it was awesome. The crowd is energetic, the staff is attentive and very friendly. The wine list is superb with great choices from CA and Italy. And last but not least the PIZZA A+++. I'm Italian and from NY and the pizza was right on. The sauce is tasty, the mozzarella is fresh, and the crust thin, chewy yet crusty, the way is supposed to be. It is busy and crowded but that's how you know it's a good thing! I would highly recommend it.... read more

Very good food - a little too small for fun – Two of us dined at this new establishment Sunday night. While very quant, this small dining room proved to be too loud to carry on a conversation. We waited about 15 minutes to be seated, all the while Frank played very loudly from the sound system. The maximum capacity indoors was 49. With staff included, I counted 55 people. Very tight to say the least! After being seated, I had to move over several times so the wait staff could manage their way to the wine storage directly nex... read more

Tiny matchbox of a spot in Uptown serves authentic New York-style thin-crust pizza. – The Scene Floor-to-ceiling wine shelves line this highly urban, crackling-with-energy dining room, with tables set so closely, patrons quickly learn to love thy neighbor. A patio in front offers an alfresco option. Solo diners, cell phones pressed to their ears, camp out at the bar under the eye of congenial bartender Craig Wolf and pay their respects to the portrait of Frank Sinatra on the wall. The Food This is true New York-style pizza, ... read more
