I cannot describe a worse experience than I had with CalMac ferries. We visited Scotland from the US and had a ferry booked to Islay on Tuesday, October 22. On Monday we stayed in an area closer to port Kennacraig so we could easily get the ferry in the morning. We wouldn’t have even known that the ferry was cancelled unless our hotel told us to check because they were cancelling rides. The ferry was cancelled due to mechanical issues. We stayed in Tarbert just a 10-minute drive away so as to catch the earliest ferry to Islay. We were impressed by the efficiency of the operations at both the terminal as well as in the ferry. We enjoyed a comfortable 2-hour ferry ride where the cafe and bistro offered delicious food and drinks at reasonable prices. The lounges and toilets were all properly clean and tidy. Probably among the top 3 best ferry rides I've ever taken.

Easy to use website, efficient booking and not bad prices. Lovely on board and such a well oiled operation.

We travelled from Kennacraig to Islay and both ways the staff couldn't have been friendlier! Helping to squeeze us on the earlier ferry when the bad weather came in. Delicious Mac and cheese too onboard too.
