The name's a bit misleading. Not only is there no ocean view, but this is not your ordinary diner. Though it has streamlined aluminum and black-and-white tile, and the fare is inspired by diner cuisine, the ingredients are the freshest available and the dishes are prepared with care and imagination. I've been going to Bette's for 30+ years and have never had a bad breakfast or lunch. The food is delicious and the place is just fun to visit!
This place is a prerequisite for breakfast anytime we travel to Berkley. The home fried potatoes are the best and served with a dallop of fresh sour cream. Omelets are amazing too. Pancakes and waffles are also off the hook delicious! The coffee was kind of weak for my taste but there's a Peets Coffee right across the street.

We met family early on a a Saturday. There was already a line, but it was well worth the wait. We got coffee to go until our table was ready. Everything was great, especially the pumpkin pancakes. Service was wonderful. A real gem in Berkeley!
We stumbled upon this gem. We waited an hour to be seated but the food was great. The lox scramble was fabulous. The corned beef has was tasty. We grabbed a slice of key lime pie and pumpkin to go. Well hubby is the key lime lover....and has always saved a bite for me when trying stuff from new places...this time he didn't...told me the pie was "too good to waste even a bite on someone who doesn't enjoy key lime" he has already said we need to make the 30 minute drive to get a few for Thanksgiving.
