Anthony's Fish Grotto

4.5

About this business

A man-made lake provides refuge to wildlife and dozens of tame ducks, providing entertainment for the diners at this long-established San Diego seafood restaurant called the Anthony's Fish Grotto. It also makes the hour-long dinnertime wait much more pleasant for kids and adults alike. Seafood is the best bet here and the daily specials offer great value and delicious preparation. The Clam Chowder, from Anthony's matriarch Mamma Ghio, is renowned, a rich red broth liberally studded with tender clams.

We went there yesterday for lunch and felt this sadness. My husband was born and raised in San Diego. He has been going to Anthony's since he was 10. He is now 62. It was a place that held so much memories of families and friends, good times. To remove it from where it is and replace it with something new is like trampling on history. It has become a victim of the mentality that if it's old, get rid of it. It also speaks to the hundreds of customers who are now retired and elderly who have been going there for a long time. Great location and that's about it. Food was average and although server Ruben was nice he didn't provide good service.

Not nearly as good as the hype! Fish sandwich was just "ok". Crab-mac tasted like store bought. Others in my party of four were equally disappointed. Oh well, at least we can say we tried it.

I am so sorry to hear that Anthony's Fish Grotto is closing at the downtown location! Through my entire life, starting at the location at Laural Street and Pacific Coast Highway, Anthony's has always been the go to for our celebrations. This location will be missed by my entire family !!

Had a wonderful lunch. I've been to Anthony's since my parents first brought me in 1972. Always have had a good experience. I'm sad this location is closing, but there's still La Mesa!
