Good food, cramped space – We went on a Tuesday night, bu the place was packed! The food was good, but not exceptional. Calamari and scallops cooked to the perfect texture. Had the seard tuna, and with the arugula and peaches, it tasted just delicious. Cheese with pinenuts and honey very good too, yet very strong (beware!). Our maitre d' was very gracious and even gave us free appetizers. But the waiter was a bit curt; he kept on hurrying us up and wouldnt serve the dishes properly (he just handed them over to us).
Not worth the hype .. – We were expecting to be blown away at Angelini based on the reviews we saw, and not just on this website. Our meal was good, and there was nothing wrong, but it wasn't anything memorable. The calamari was chewy, and the snapper was drowned in olive juice (not oil). The mozz and tomato and other salads were great, but its hard to mess that up. Also, the waiters hurried us, and when asked if we could have 5 more minutes to look at desert, he actually said "no." I'm not kidding. And ... I had the smalles... read more
Worth the wait – Although the service can be a little slow in getting to your needs, the food makes the wait worth every minute. From the moment you step inside and smell the aroma of great cooking, you can tell you are in for a good meal. Everything was excellently prepared and presented. This is a great place to bring a date and enjoy some great food. I recommend ordering a variety of different appetizers and sharing so that you can really experience the quality of the menu.
Worth the Wait and the Money – Truly inspired food coming out of this kitchen, and it is clearly made with care as well as attention to fresh ingredients and invention. Granted it is CROWDED and LOUD inside, but that's what happens when you start serving up some of the tastiest 'nouvelle italian' on the east side. You definitely don't want to go w/o a res. and will wait when you get there, but in this humble reviwer's opinion it's worth all of the inconvienience.
the pasta, freshly made, was just the right texture, with just a slight essence of tomato and shrimp. the essence of shrimp was wonderful, but the tomato could have been more flavorful. the ahi tuna was a mesh of pesto and semi-raw tuna, odd at first, but soon the flavors fit comfortably and unobtrusively, though a bit oily. the fish texture was wonderful and perfect. we finished with a chocolate mousse and an apple tart. the apple in the tart was slightly undercooked. but the crust flavor was very good. the chocolate mousse... read more
excellent food but terrible service – Poor service. Very snob. Especially if you don't order a lot of drinks, although we order 6 four-courses meals. The Duck Breast was overcooked (since the server didn't ask my guest at what temperature she wanted it), and when she ask to have it medium-rare, it took 25 minutes to get it back from the kitchen. Obviously, we were all done eating when she got her entree. A very regretable experience despite a very chef and very good food.
This is really a very good Italian restaurant. The food is soooo very Italian. Like in Italy I mean. I learned while I enjoyed some wonderful wines. Not cheap but really worth the price. The service was excellent.
By far the best Italian in LA – One of the most fun evenings I've had out in a while. Our waiter made us melt in our seats but also helped us pick a great bottle of wine. The service was unbelievabley friendly and our overall dinner was by far the best Italian food I've ever had in LA!
My Heart Melted – Have you ever felt a basil leaf melt on your tongue? Have you ever eaten a fish so mild that its smell was salty-sweet? My first inclination would be to tell you how horrible this place is so that I may snag a reservation more easily. But, I must tell you that everything I've ordered here has been incredible, mind altering, even. Nonna's lasagne, ubiquitously written up, IS all it's cracked up to be.
