I went here back in Oct of 2022 with a wasp sting. The male medical receptionist at the lobby, who had a nurse scrub on, had the weirdest attitude and appeared extremely psychotic. He was unsympathetic and told me in front of everyone waiting in the lobby that "stop pretending, you are not hurting" in the COLDEST CHILLING tone I have ever heard in my life. Please think twice before visiting this emergency department if you want to avoid being trapped in unnecessary medical debt. For context I am a college student insured through UCSHIP which provides solid coverage a $250 copay and 20 percent coinsurance for ER visits. One evening I went to the Sutter Health Emergency Department for severe knee pain caused by a recurring cyst. This was my first time going to the ER and it was not what I was expecting. All the staff were very nice and helpful. From the security at the front to the nurses and the technicians. Everyone was helpful and friendly. I honestly expected it to take longer, for folks there to be stressed out and short. But everyone was professional and caring. Hopefully I don’t ever go back :) But thanks to everyone who helped and got me back on my feet.

It pains me to give such a low review because I was born here, my daughter was born here, my father practiced here for decades, my sister works here. I love Alta Bates. But this ER has really gone downhill. And I know it’s not all their fault because of how hospital ERs are these days with the boarding issues, etc. I came here on 11Sep2025, a Thursday around 4 pm, with a dislocated and broken shoulder after a fall. I wanted to share my recent ER experience to reassure others that you will get the help you need here. It was my first time and I didn’t know what to expect. Overall, my experience was very positive. I received the care I was seeking, and while it did take some time, my condition wasn’t life-threatening, so I understood the wait.
