Recently left a negative review of this place based on an experience I had in 2021. Had the occasion to go back Nov. 2025 in order to get an emergency surgery and my impression did a full 180, I was SHOCKED. This place was full of speedy, attentive, and really kind people who helped me at every turn. They let me ask a million questions and took my healthcare very seriously. It felt great to be treated like a fellow human as well as a patient. Thank you Alta Bates!
I am a Berkeley student who went in for a concussion after falling down the stairs. I went to the ER as my pupils were different sizes following the fall. I arrived around 11pm. Around 2am, I was called in to see a nurse, who took my vitals. I advised her my blood pressure was elevated from previous issues with alcohol that were now resolved. I went here back in Oct of 2022 with a wasp sting. The male medical receptionist at the lobby, who had a nurse scrub on, had the weirdest attitude and appeared extremely psychotic. He was unsympathetic and told me in front of everyone waiting in the lobby that "stop pretending, you are not hurting" in the COLDEST CHILLING tone I have ever heard in my life. Please think twice before visiting this emergency department if you want to avoid being trapped in unnecessary medical debt. For context I am a college student insured through UCSHIP which provides solid coverage a $250 copay and 20 percent coinsurance for ER visits. One evening I went to the Sutter Health Emergency Department for severe knee pain caused by a recurring cyst.
