That's it! I'm moving to Portland! – I visited from the San Francisco Bay Area and my friends took me to dinner at Vindalho. We're pretty spoiled Bay Area food snobs, and we loved the food! Wonderful, creative meals, fresh ingredients, great service and a lovely open ambience. I really don't get the griping about waiters not being Indian (in the Bay Area, they're all Hispanic ... I rarely see Indian chefs in Indian restaurants.), or the food not being "authentic." Vindalho doesn't claim to be authentic. It's just a wonderful... read more
A great addition to the Portland restaurant scene – We have been reluctant to try Vindahlo because of it's no-reservations policy. Finaly decided to risk a long wait and give it a try, surprisingly we were seated immediately, on a Friday night, perhaps the no-reservations policy is keeping people away. Regardless we are sorry we waited so long, this is definitly one of Portlands better Restaurants. Perhaps some of the previous reviewers are correct and the dishes aren't "Authentic" Indian dishes - so what!, it was every bit ... read more
What a ripoff! Not real Indian fare. – Avoid this restaurant like the plague! Overpriced for what you get but really, the worst part of this place is how un-authentic the food is. The kitchen staff are a bunch of young inexperienced white kids trying to prepare ethnic meals under the watchfull eye of a unfriendly manager or the owner who simply lingers in front of the kitchen and doesnt bother to see how the dinners are being taken care of by his wait staff. This is one of those places that is more into the presentation of h... read more
Superb Cuisine – I would recommend this restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere, exceptional service and a delightful use of spices.
Food was excellent. Waitstaff was very attentive, especially the bartender. For dessert I had the chocolate somosa with caramelized bananas. Very, very good. Highly recommended.
This is called Indian?! – I was surprised that the Tandoori Chicken dish and Naan I ordered didn't remotely taste like any Indian Tandoori or Naan on the planet. What a sham! Call it anything but not Tandoori. It was too bland and didn't have any of the piquant taste that real tandoori cooking gives to the meat. I can't believe they would serve something like this! The suburban kids cooking this stuff probably have never had an Indian dish in their life. There are dozens of Indian style restaurants much better than this plac... read more
Excellent food and service – This is an excellent addition to the Eastside restaurant scene. Superb food, witty, attentive service, full bar, decent wine list. What's not to like? Well, the decor is the getting-to-be-typical Industrial Chic, meaning all the glass, cement and steel generates a punishing noise level. Add in an open kitchen, and it can be hard to converse. Hopefully Vindalho will install some noise dampening artifacts, and then you'll have a perfect dining experience.
A memorable experience – I was totally impressed with the entire experience at Vindalho. The smells were enticing. The wine selection was outstanding. The meal was well crafted from start to finish. My date, who was Persian, concurred with all that I have said here.
Overpriced and Underspiced – This restaurant is a complete joke. The food is uninspiring - incorrectly spiced and improperly prepared. I ordered the monkfish, it arrived stone cold and raw so they had to recook it. On its second appearance it was cooked alright, but unfortunately it seemed the chef had neglected to add any spices to the tomato sauce that came with it. The naan bread was doughy, undercooked and oversalted - if you can't get something so basic right, you should forget about having an Indian restaurant. My comp... read more
