Champagne is served in a flute (tall and narrow stemmed glass) so the bubbles can be preserved. Brandy, on the other hand, should be served in a snifter (wider bowl with short stem) so the drinker can warm it with their palm while enjoying its scent.

On the good news side, the lead in lead crystal will not harm you when you drink from it. The lead combines with the glass material in a way that renders it harmless. However, if you leave red wine in lead crystal overnight, the wine will stain the glass and require extra effort to clean.

Did you know that before man figured out how to craft glass, nature was already making it? For example, when lightning strikes sand, the heat sometimes fuses the sand into long, slender glass tubes called fulgurites.

Recycling glass is not only good for the environment, but it conserves raw materials as well. In fact, just one ton of recycled glass saves 1,300 pounds of sand, 410 pounds of soda ash, and 380 pounds of limestone.

All glassware such as containers, bowls, and ornaments can be recycled. During the recycling process, it is broken up and then melted with silica sand, limestone, and soda ash to make glass for new containers.

Most glass labware is made from borosilicate glass. Do you know why? Because borosilicate has low thermal expansion properties. This means that when you heat up this glass, it won’t expand and shatter like regular glass.

Making glass is a super easy process that needs just four ingredients. The first 3 ingredients are in all glass: sand, soda ash, and limestone. The fourth ingredient is the addition of chemicals to give the desired color to the glass.
