Glassware can be any item made from glass. More often than not, they are thought of as objects used as serveware and drinkware. The latter is self-explanatory while the former refers to any implement used for serving such as bowls, pitchers, and the like.

What are the different types of glassware? Based on general appearance, they are broadly categorized as: tumblers (straight or curved sides with no stem or handle), goblets (with a stem and foot) and cups or mugs (with a handle).

Glass is a preferred material for many items, especially food and beverage containers. This is because it is transparent, impermeable as well as non-toxic. What's more is, glass is inert, meaning it does not react with other substances.

Simple as they look, glass beverage containers do have identifiable parts. These are the: foot, stem, bowl, rim, and handle. The foot, bowl and the rim are found in all drinkware but the stem and handle may not be depending on the design of the vessel.

By definition, glassware is any object made out of glass that is oftentimes designed for everyday use. Also, glassware refers to items used as eating and drinking implements. In the catering industry specifically, glassware has come to mean drinkware.

So, what's the difference between a pitcher and carafe? While both are used for serving liquids, the pitcher is a wide-rimmed container with a protruding spout and handle. A carafe, on the other hand, more closely resembles a tall bottle without handles.
