The Pit

About this business

The Pit offers some of the best barbecue in Raleigh. Set in a restored early 20th Century meatpacking warehouse, the restaurant carries on the North Carolina barbecue tradition by serving full-hog, pit-cooked pork, and other barbecue essentials. But The Pit is more than a generic barbecue restaurant: it combines the generous portions of classic meat-loving joints with some surprises. The pork is free-range, and guests can enjoy barbecued tofu, wines, cocktails, and a comprehensive list of bourbons.

First time in Raleigh, we had the Carolina Style Ribs. Being from South Georgia I thought we had good Q. These ribs were the best ribs we ever had anywhere. We didn't eat much of the sides because we were stuffing ourselves with ribs. I would definitely go back if in the area again. The service was great with several people waiting on us. Only one bad thing was We ordered the Bannana pudding to take back to the hotel and it was awful mostly meringue very little pudding and the Bannanas were black.

Business response:

Thank you for stopping in to see us William! Your feedback regarding the banana pudding has been sent to our culinary team.

My husband and I decided to finally give the Pit a try. Our waiter, no name tag, was mediocre at best. He was lazy, lacking the initiative to really want to be there. Our receipt stated that he was pm server 3. They got my husband's order wrong and when brought to his attention his answer was..." Well I can either take the extra items off or you can leave it like it is ." WHAT? The food was ok but I will not actively choose to go back!

I will never know how great the food is because the Hostess was such a jerk we left! She said "pick a table anywhere". So we found one and started to sit down when she said "if you get out of his way he can set the table for you". Such a bitchy look on her face so we just walked away without saying one word...

Business response:

Hello Lea, We sincerely apologize that this was your experience with us. We will address such behavior with our host team immediately. Thank you for taking the time to let us know.

We were excited to try The Pit before our concert last night. The menu looked great. The place was busy but the service was quick. However that's were the good news stopped. We had brisket, pulled pork & baby back ribs and were severely disappointed in it all. The brisket was over half fat and very salty. The pulled pork was bland. The ribs were so dry that even adding the sauce at the table didn't make them edible.

Business response:

Hi Barbara, Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us about your experience, and we are sorry that we did not live up to your expectations. If you would be open to giving us another chance, we would like to arrange another visit for you. Please email Jennifer@EmpireEats.com at your convenience. Sincerely, Jennifer Winter, Empire Eats

Loved it so much! We requested to sit outside and the manager moved us as requested after the host neglected to inform a server to clean the vacant outside table for us. The food is great! We had the baby back ribs and the brisket with okra, Brunswick stew, and Mac and cheese. The biscuits and hush puppies we were brought before our meal were excellent even though it was close to closing time. The service was great - our servers, Kristy and Jenny, were very prompt, courteous and accommodating. Will recommend in the future.

Best BBQ and service! Got a quick bite for lunch while getting away from the beach for a couple of days and spending some time in Raleigh. I ordered the chopped BBQ with fries and Brunswick stew, my girlfriend ordered the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and Mac & cheese. We also sampled the brisket and pulled pork. Also, the triple team server system in place is great. We had Jerry, Lewis and Chris and they were phenomenal! Everything was amazing and I'll definitely be stopping by every time I'm in town!

I went there for my carnivore husband thinking I'd have a challenging time finding something vegetarian. Not so! I am not a huge tofu fan to begin with, and it's very difficult to make tofu well; however the Pit has nailed it! The soy nuggets were amazing, even to hubby :). I can't wait to go back and give the veggie burger a go. Great service too. Nice atmosphere. Looks like they are successfully attracting families, couples, girlfriends, etc.
