Sweet Basil has replaced Laslow's Broadway Bistro, and its popularity is already evident. The upscale dining room boasts fine linens and a genuine Thai decor. As with most Portland Thai establishments, the curries are done to perfection here and make a wonderful accompaniment to all the meat and vegetable dishes that dominate the menu. If you are new to this food and not sure whether to go spicy or sweet, ask for a recommendation from your knowledgeable server. Wine and beer are also available.

unimpressive food – It looks so cute and had such nice reviews that I had to try it... once... I'm not sure what the appeal here is for other diners, but it can't be the bland food. Wasn't even worth a second try.
Very Disappointing! – We recently sat inside for dinner here, after having moved back to Portland. What a disappointment. The service was appalling - it took 20 minutes just to get the wine we ordered - and the food was not good! In fact, we declined left-overs (which we never do at Thai). I really loved this place years ago - I hope it comes back around.
Business response:
Sorry for your disappointment. I will do my best to imporve our service and food quality. Thank you Sweet Basil
A declining star – This was my favorite Thai place in NE and when I moved away from Portland I always looked forward to visiting SB when I came home for a visit. The last time I went I noticed little differences like the portions seemed smaller or a scare 3 or 4 shrimp in a whole dish. Confirmed by former regulars and coupled with all the dishes seemed to have increases $1 or so Sweet Basil has gone from a great spot to an average overpriced restaurant. Too bad.
Where's the flavor?? Food is not that great... – Going to a Thai place, I expect my food to be flavorful. Sweet Basil was not...the pad see ew was quite bland and the pad thai was on the sour side. The only decent dish was the pineapple fried rice (a nice presentation inside a whole pineapple although a little overpriced, you are most likely paying for the pineapple itself). The outdoor dining area below the grape vines is beautiful, but the food is not worth it. The only flavor I found in this restaurant is in its name...no... read more
Don't Miss it! – While I mistakeningly ended up at Lemongrass instead of Sweet Basil, it did give me perspective. I've lived on Thai food from Thailand to Alaska, and learned to make it myself! I love Thai and Sweet Basil is the place to enjoy it in Portland. Great food, great ambiance, great value, and great attitude.
Business response:
Thank you very much for you review, Thai food are so many way to cook, a person can cook same dish in many differant way. I mean every restaurant have they own recipe. Everyone have they own favorite restaurant. I'll keep up to be you favorite. Thanks again BOOS
Terrible Service, Good Food and Value – The food was all-around good, especially the portion size considering the price. However, the service was awful -- the waitress ignored us, it took us forever to order, to receive that order, and to order desert when the time came. The upper floor seemed dreadfully understaffed, which might have explained some of this. Unfortunately, this service tainted what was otherwise a very tasty meal -- the service was so slow getting our food to the table that it was barely lukewarm upon arriva... read more

Take you first date here! – This is attatched (downstairs) to Sweet Basil, and is a BAR that serves full Thai menu until one in the morning. I've gone here to kill an hour before a movie, I've spent two and a half ours enjoying every appetizer and entree in the dining room. This resturaunt has never disappointed me once. You could come here, tell your date to get the most expensive thing on the menu, order three signiture cocktails appeice, and get out of there with tip for 60 bucks. All this while you sit on a couch, and he... read more
all around good – Sweet Basil is one of my favorite spots for Thai, whether I'm in the mood for an elaborate meal or just a quick curry fix. The extensive menu offers a wide variety of styles and prices, so I can take friends who are experienced diners as well as those who may be unfamiliar with Thai. The bar is also a real treat - fresh squeezed juice, bar infused liquors, and signature drinks galore. Service is always timely and polite. Try it out - it'll be your favorite Thai place!
Business response:
We'll keep up our quality and improve our service. Thanks again for your time to review. BOOS owner
Awful service, so-so food. – Food is not too bad, but they do the "lots of cheap filler-ingredients, skimpy on the pricey/yummy bits" routine. In any case, even if it was 5-star food it wouldn't be worth putting up with the obnoxious service. Overall, a VERY unpleasant experience. I would never go back. Don't waste your money -- or time -- here.
Business response:
We'll improve our food quality and service. Thanks again BOOS Owner
