When one hears the term "soul food" probably the last thing they would associate it with is the word "vegan," but Oakland's Souley Vegan has made the oxymoron a reality. Diners can choose from all kinds of familiar Southern foods like fried okra, cornbread and collared greens, along with some not so familiar dishes like BBQ or fried tofu. Souley Vegan cooks up all its food with soul, as the name implies, making it so good you might not even notice the lack of animal products.

The only reason I'm giving this place 4 stars is the server I had. It was the end of the day, so maybe that's why, but she wasn't very attentive at all. I specifically said that if the Po boy came with a side, then awesome, but that if it didn't I would have the Mac and cheese and she added the Mac and cheese even though it already came with Fries. I felt like she couldn't hear me no matter what I was saying or how direct I was being with her. The food however was FanFuckingTastic! I'd give the food a solid ten out of ten.
Food was fantastic. I'm not vegetarian but the flavors are all good. Next time I'm in Oakland I'm definitely going back.

Great vegan food! Delicious! I had the Southern fried tofu with grits and gumbo. The the leftovers for breakfast. My daughter had the "Chicken" poboy. So big we had leftovers, also delicious the next day. We are vegans from New York so we are food snobs ;-) and the food and atmosphere was great.

I'm not even vegan or vegetarian, but this place was amazing! The food was amazing: well seasoned, great proportions, reasonable prices, homey interior, and great music. Turns out, you don't always need meat to enjoy a meal.

Service here is bad (poorly organized) but most of the food here is good. Service was so poor, I was sitting there thinking who do I have to kill to get a knife? (Never got the knife) Collar Greens, Yams, Black Eye Peas, Red Beans & Rice, Orka and Barbeque Tofu very good.

I can't even describe how happy I am,this place is amazing this girl do magic in the kitchen. The service was amazing to the girls all the servers were super nice. To bad is not closer to my town. If you a vegan trying to show your friends vegan food is delicious? This is the right place. If you are nothing but curious?you are gonna fall in love 😍
