When one hears the term "soul food" probably the last thing they would associate it with is the word "vegan," but Oakland's Souley Vegan has made the oxymoron a reality. Diners can choose from all kinds of familiar Southern foods like fried okra, cornbread and collared greens, along with some not so familiar dishes like BBQ or fried tofu. Souley Vegan cooks up all its food with soul, as the name implies, making it so good you might not even notice the lack of animal products.

Always a treat when I get to go here. Sampler platter is my fave!!
My motto: will drive for food! I will be repeated this drive sample plate fed me for the entire day! Flavors all individual to themselves were rich and natural, service was impeccable, the vibes.. just everything about this place will keep me coming back
Went for brunch the food was pretty good, however the service was lacking in some areas. My red beans and rice was cold but they brought another one pretty fast. It was hard trying to get a waiter to come to our table after the food came.
Everything was AMAZING! Tofu scramble, biscuits and gravy, smothered potatoes, blueberry pancakes.
As a vegan I gave up meat not flavor. This meal was overpriced and badly seasoned. The black eyed peas were filled with unflavored stewed tomatoes and hella oregano (that's not soul food) I didn't order spaghetti. Same with the greens. Soul food requires the holy trinity there was nothing holy about this meal no wait there was "Holy Shit! You want me to pay $40 for this?!?!" It's sad that living healthy means eating nasty and paying more. This plate cost the same as a soul food meal at Lenas with meat... any body see the pro... read more
that fake shrimp po boy sandwich was hella good! but idk bout that vegan mac n cheese was ok
My new criteria for selecting friends will now be whether or not they have been to Souley Vegan. I can't put into words how much I enjoyed my combination platter of barbecue tofu, mac and "cheese", and yams along with a side of fried zucchini. My life will never be the same. I'm still full 24 hours later. This place has essentially welcomed me into the world of veganism. My transition has been successful thus far. It's been an encouraging and a tasty 4 months, but I will have you know that Souley Vegan has catapulted me into... read more
The food was delicious to me. I wish they had a restaurant close to where I live.
They say you can't shake a first impression, and mine was stellar. I tried a combo platter, and so did the three friends with which I was dining. It was a great decision because we all got to sample lots of different menu items. ***deep sigh*** We were all amazed at the depth of flavors and attention to textures and sauces - these things are very important in vegan dining. I recommend Souley Vegan frequently, and I will certainly return when in the East Bay. PLEASE open a satellite in SF?! <3
