The service was horrible. We were there on a Friday night. The restaurant was more than half empty, yet we were seated right by the ice maker and the kitchen. Our waitress was also the bartender, and when it came time to take our order, she didn't even bother to walk to our table, but rather stood behind the bar. I had to turn completely in my chair to give her the order. The mussels were fantastic, but the food was nothing more then okay. Certainly not anything worth returning for. Family members arrived and we were complet... read more
Took my wife their and we had a great Italian dinner. Very quiet with an understated charm. They offered up wine selections with every entree. Did not sit at the wine bar but close. It had it's own charm for an intimate place. It's a lot like they say it is, a nice place to enjoy dinner and conversation without distraction. We had great Chicken Marsala and Lasagna dishes. Very nice marinara sauce. The wait staff was very friendly. Lots of parking out front and around the building. Great place if you're looking for somewhere ... read more
I've been to hundreds of Italian restaurants in my time, always searching for that one special one you can call your favorite. It's seldom that one comes upon a restaurant that instantly makes you feel at home. Roma Tomatoes is that sort of place. The ambience, the smell of simmering sauce, the friendliness of the owners and staff-all combine to make one heck of a first impression. And of course, the food is authentic Italian. From the home made "ragu" (slang for gravy) to the fine Italian wines and in house deserts it made ... read more
My lovely wife is always complaining the only place to get unique meals is downtown Charleston. I read the write up in the paper about this place. I'm always looking for a new restaurant that is locally owned and isn't a chain or bar food kind of place. I like my food fresh and cooked to my specific desires. Roma Tomatoes is a beautifully decorated bistro with a dining room reminiscent of a cozy niche on a cruise ship. The service was fast and attentive. The food was excellent! The owner suggested ravioli and it was the best... read more
The Post Courier had an excellent article on Roma Tomatoes this week. I had never heard of this restaurant before. I live in Coosaw Creek and usually go downtown for a superior and classy meal. Although the standards of most Charleston restaurants has drastically fallen over the last few years (I blame the cruise lines!) the high prices usually keep out people who are more comfortable in a bar or national chain restaurant. Not me. I am a very discriminating diner and insist on the finer things life has to offer. That's what ... read more
I took my 90 year old friend to lunch at Roma Tomatoes to celebrate her birthday. The food was very flavorable and filling. I had the Monti Cristo sandwich with some Italian seasoned French Fries. I didn't finish but I took the rest home. My friend had the grilled salmon BLT. She surprised me by eating the whole thing. The owner brought us a small saucer with his spaghetti gravy for us to taste with some "finger" cut slices of bread. It was truly authentic gravy. I use that term to describe the sauce because it was very smoo... read more
Marvelous atmosphere and superb food. This little bistro is too hidden from the street. I was driving by and saw the twinkling lights in their trees and decided to give them a try. I made a U-turn and found a parking spot a bit away from the front door. They were busy and that's always a good sign. I was greeted at the door by a lovely young woman and told my table would be ready in a few minutes and would I like to wait at the bar. The bar is very cozy and well stocked. There are a few tables in the area and decided to eat ... read more
I was out of town for a few months on business and heard from my family that my favorite Italian restaurant had a new owner and was reopening from Roma Tomatoes. I was curious to see the changes and had dinner there shortly after arriving back in town. I was disheartened to discover that what was once a truly great restaurant was now mediocre at best. The menu used to have unique and robust selections that never disappointed me and always left me feeling satisfied. It was now replaced with a boring and very basic Italian men... read more
