PenFed sucks! Beware of loan/refinance loan applicants, you are wasting your time and money (at least the appraisal fee)! Same story here! Similar to many frustrated customers who gave one star. If there is a negative one, I would give them. I applied for a refinancing in Sept, initial closing date was on Nov, they failed it and moved to Dec 21; failed again; now the date is showing in my loan portal January, 2022. No explanation! No denial!

Business response:

We are very sorry to hear of the issues with your mortgage application. You deserve to receive excellent service from us, and we apologize that your application process has not gone smoothly. We informed management of your concerns.

PenFed is a scam. They do not give you a provisional credit right away during a transaction dispute. This is the only bank that I know that do this. Other credit card companies credit your account right away while investigation is ongoing. Not this scam bank. No customer service whatsoever. Thank god it's just a credit card with this s*** bank. After I get my rightful refund, I am going to run away from this soon-to-be bankrupt company.

Business response:

We are very sorry to hear of the issues with your credit card. We understand the importance of timely dispute processing, and apologize for any delay. We informed management of your concerns.

Don't waste your time if you ever had to go into forebearance due to COVID - even if your accounts are now current. No one asked me in advance and wasted 7 weeks of my time, even pre-approving and approving my application only to tell me a WEEK before my closing that this is a condition. I don't have the words to express my anger and frustration with the carelessness of this credit union.

It's counting down to 15 days to our closing on 02/01/2021 and so far we still haven't heard anything about the progress of our loan. Even though we called/emailed many times to our loan officer Julie Flores and loan processor Peter Scott but nobody updates us about our loan status and advice us if there's anything else that we need to take care of prior to our closing day. Hope that someone will help us, thanks!

If there is negative star that can be given. I would go for the lowest on that as well for this credit union. I was member with them several years and had credit card which worked ok ( but not great) for several years. I rarely used the card also. During early June 2020 I applied for a refinance of my investment property over phone just under $80k loan for a property worth $225k. Joint application with both applicants over 810+ credit score. Disclosed all the information as asked over the phone even got the appraisal complet... read more

We bank with PenFed, so it seemed a natural extension to use them for our mortgage. VERY different experience. The communication with Jamie Knott (Loan Officer) at the onset was terrific. Then once we agreed to move forward we sent several emails and got crickets in return. Then we started communicating with Peter Scott (processer) to try to get answers. Slow communication (or no communication) with him, as well. We paid for our appraisal on 11/25. We (my husband and I, and our agent) tried to get communication re: appraisal... read more

We are half way through our closing and are very frustrated. We are at our due diligence period today and we STILL do not have an appraiser set up and it is close to impossible to get anyone on the phone. We thought we had this resolved last week (when the appraiser cancelled but Penfed did not communicate that to anyone, nor did they do anything until we reached out to them to push them). Penfed said they could fix the problem but the appraisal would now cost $715 (we had already paid $450). They said it was because of the ... read more

Last week i visited the Fort Gordon branch to make a deposit into my Savings account using the transaction voucher form that was clearly checked for Savings Account. Did not check my receipt because there had not been any problems with my deposits. However the next day i checked my account online and noticed the teller Did Not put the deposit in my Savings account, she put the money in my Checking account. Obviously there was no attention to detail.

Business response:

Hi Denise, we're so sorry to hear of your experience. While it is impossible to prevent all mistakes, we do recognize the importance of ensuring accuracy. If you need further assistance, please feel free to send an email with your name, phone number, and a reference to this BBB review to Comments@PenFed.org. On 7/1/2020 I played around with Penfed's preapproval on personal loans. Was preapproved for up to $20,000 logged out went back in to try a new amount the first one i played with had a continue button that i didn't push (I was scared it would push the app through) So I did another one to look at different payments for $15,000. Thought maybe some of my cc payments would make my score go up, but no major % reached. I was looking at this to take over the 2 loans I have that are higher then 14.99% btw. So i thought about it for ... read more
