My husband and I visited Monticello and our tour guide was Patricia. She was so very knowledgeable, patient and enthusiastic about her mission. The estate is quite fortunate to have someone teaching the living history of Monticello in the way Patricia does!
Go early in the summer to enjoy the cool morning - you might even get a private tour from the gardening staff like we did. The behind the scenes tour was well worth the extra $$$
Thank you to The Slavery 'Tour' guide, Brandon, at Monticello. Without a doubt one of the most thoughtful and thought provoking guides I have met anywhere. I strongly recommend you take this tour before the tour of the house itself. It's a complex story of a complex time. No need or value in romanticising it. Thank you Brandon.
What else can be said about this Renaissance Man who lived among--and became--one of the Founding Fathers? The fact that he was more proud of instituting the U. of Virginia more than being President gives us a glimpse into the Quality of this man's soul. What he cared about was For The People, not himself. A legacy to shine for all time. AND he has the most beautiful of all Memorials on the Potomac.
Visiting my sister in West Virginia, from Texas, we made the trek on June 21, 2015 to visit Monticello. I have previously been totally in awe of everything having to do with the Lewis and Clarke Expedition and so studying Thomas Jefferson was the logical next step. What a joy the entire Monticello experience proved to be! Quite honestly one of the most amazing experiences I have had in quite some time.
I loved it, going to one of my biggest idol's home was great <3 it's absolutely stunningly gorgeous there
Enjoyed our visit today!! I came to Monticello way back in 1977 on a family trip....I remembered many things about the home. I was just 8 years old. Today I stopped with my husband. Thank you!!
Great place to visit with your family. Beautiful home with wonderful views.
Went in June and so enjoyed the visit...especially the gardens. Opted to see more of the grounds and hiked from the lower lot up to the house. It's an easy trail, mostly decking. The gardens were very interesting. The gardeners were informative and let us sample a strawberry spinach. Our tour of the house felt a little rushed. Still, we learned so much about Jefferson's lifestyle, values and passions. Enjoy your visit!
